Fayetteville School Board To Interview Two For Superintendent

FAYETTEVILLE -- The School Board will conduct two interviews today for the superintendent's job.

Douglas B. Powers, superintendent in Maize, Kan., and Matt Saferite, principal at Ramay Junior High School, will meet with the School Board in separate sessions. The interviews will be conducted in executive session starting at 5 p.m.

Powers lists among his accomplishments as superintendent developing a strategic plan, facilitating a facilities master planning process, establishing a virtual school and restructuring the administration.

Before joining the Maize district in 2009, Powers was superintendent of the Marysville, Kan., school district and executive director of educating services in the DeSoto, Kan., school district. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Emporia State University; a school administrator certificate from Pittsburg State University and a doctoral degree in educational leadership from Baker University in Baldwin City, Kan.

Saferite has spent two decades in administration. He was an assistant principal at Ramay before becoming director of technology programs and management information systems for the district, a post he held for a year.

He was the assistant principal at Rogers High School for five years before becoming principal at Ramay in 2006.

Saferite was recognized as Principal of the Year by the Arkansas Association of Secondary School Principals and the National Association of Secondary School Principals for 2009.

He holds a bachelor's degree from John Brown University, a master's degree from the University of Arkansas and a doctorate in educational administration from Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn.

The board received 17 applications by March 31 and are reviewing the resumes to determine how many applicants they will interview.

The board hopes to have new superintendent on board by July 1. Superintendent Vicki Thomas resigned effective June 30.
