Rogers Heritage

War Eagles Prepping For Conference Meet

Rogers Heritage took a few more steps forward this week in preparation for the 7A-West Conference meet in two weeks.

Senior Woodrow Murray won the 1,600 meter run at the Siloam Springs Panther Relays, while the other Heritage varsity athletes competed in Van Buren at the Pointer Relays on Thursday.

The War Eagles finished a solid fifth out of 16 teams in Van Buren with 76 points led by 36 points from senior Daniel Spickes. He won his specialty, the pole vault, with a meet record clearance of 15 feet, 2 inches, but was also second in the 100 and 200 meters. Spickes also won the long jump.

Sophomore Brandon Shaw also enjoyed a solid day, finishing third in the 100, fourth in the 200 and sixth in the long jump.

“Daniel had a good day, but he got caught in the middle of the pole vault having to run the 200,” Heritage coach Jay Miles said. “He ran a good 100 and a pretty good 200. It wasn’t as good a time as he’d ran previously, but we’ve been training pretty hard.”

Miles said those multi-event guys will be key to their chances in the team race at conference and state.

Springdale High

Burton’s Big Day Sparks Bulldogs

Zach Burton figures to make a big impact on both sides of the ball for Springdale High’s football team this fall.

But the junior is also one of the Bulldogs’ standout track-and-field performers this spring. Burton stole the show Thursday at the Panther Relays in Siloam Springs, scoring 34 points to lead Springdale’s boys to a first-place finish at the meet.

Burton finished first in the 200-meter dash (23.72) and the triple jump (39-11), while earning a second-place finish in the long jump (18-7) and third place in the 100 (11.61). Burton is still getting acclimated to track after recently finishing playing basketball for Springdale.

“He’s coming along,” Springdale coach Godfrey Siamusiye said. “He has improved a lot over the last two to three weeks. His start has gotten better. His finish has gotten better. He’s pretty much clicking on all cylinders right now. We have not had him for the whole season. This was like a breakthrough meet for him. I think we can expect a lot more, better things from him.”
