Sculptors compete for public art space

Four Colorado artists are among seven semifinalists chosen for the 2014 Sculpture at the River Market Public Art Competition. The winner, who will be revealed at 3 p.m. April 27, will receive a $60,000 commission to create a sculpture for the Vogel Schwartz Sculpture Garden in downtown Little Rock’s River Market District.

The semifinalists, chosen from 27 who submitted proposals, are Stephen Shachtman, Kathleen Caricof and Clay Enoch, all of Loveland, Colo.; Lorri Acott of Red Feather Lakes, Colo.; Merle Randolph of Marion, Ohio; Charles Strain of Harrisburg, Mo.; and Darrell Davis of Arlington, Texas.

Patrons who attend Friday’s preview party at the River Market pavilions will cast votes; at 9 p.m., during the Bronze and Brewskis Party, the top three vote-getters will be announced. These finalists will move on to a judging panel.

The weekend event’s Show and Sale will be held 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free.

Arkansas artists among the 45 showing works include Michael Warrick, Terry Bean and Tod “Switch” Swiecichowski, all of Little Rock; Ed Pennebaker, Green Forest; Hunter Brown, Hensley; Gene Sparling, Hot Springs; Shelley Buonaiuto, Fayetteville; Bryan Massey Sr., Conway; and Virginia Annett, Mountain Home.

HERE AND THERE …

Actor and sculptor Tony Dow and painter Stephano Sutherlin exhibit new works at Stephano’s Fine Art Gallery, inside BA Framer’s, 1813 N. Grant St., Little Rock. This is Dow’s second show at Stefano’s; he also attended a reception and exhibit of his work at the gallery in 2011.

Dow, of TV’s Leave It to Beaver fame, creates sculptures using burl wood and bronze. In 2008 his work was chosen for an exhibition at the Louvre in Paris.

A three-artist show by Hans Feyerabend, Rodney Mcgeheecq PS and Michael Warrick opens with a reception at 6 p.m. Saturday April 26 at Boswell Mourot Fine Art, 5815 Kavanaugh Blvd., Little Rock. Artist V.L. Cox, known for her multimedia and found object screen doors that tap Southern history and culture, has an exhibit of new works hanging at Mugs Cafe, 515 Main St., North Little Rock. An exhibit of creations in wood, “The Art & Function of Turned Wood,” has opened at Gallery 360, 900 S. Rodney Parham Road, Little Rock. It features works by Vernon Oberle, John Wilkins, Dick Easter, Gene Sparling, Bob Revell, Tim Hogan, Ken Glasscock, Leslie Dykes and Charles Kokes.

“Art From Above the Circle,” an exhibit of Inuit art, is showing at the J.W. Wiggins Native American Art Gallery of the Sequoyah National Research Center in the University of Arkansas at Little Rock’s University Plaza, South University and Asher Avenues,Suite 500, Little Rock.
