100 YEARS AGO April 19, 1914

COTTER - Mrs. John Hawkins, wife of a constable at Galena, Mo., a small town north of here, on the White river division, made an arrest yesterday in the absence of her husband and held the prisoner until the arrival of a deputy sheriff. The man she arrested was Ben Billyeau, a farmer. A warrant had been issued for him last year and he had dodged the officers ever since. Hearing that he was at home Mrs. Hawkins went over and demanded that he surrender to her. He was reluctant about going with her, but she convinced him that she meant business, and he came along. She held him until she got word to a deputy who took him in charge.

Gov. Faubus is due to make his decision on a sixth-term try Tuesday or Wednesday. The Democratic ticket closes on April 29, a week from Wednesday. Reporters have been badgering the governor daily on when he will make his announcement. He has given them at least three tentative dates but all have passed. He was talking to some school children Friday and one reporter asked a young boy to prod the governor about the announcement. Faubus promptly said he would make it during the coming week. One reporter told the governor he would have to do something by April 29 at noon because that is when the ticket closes. But Faubus replied: “Not necessarily, I also could make my decision by simply doing nothing.”

A sign will be posted to warn dumpers that they may be fined $500, Broadway said Tuesday. Garbage, trash, old tires, furniture, automobile parts and roofing materials have been dumped on the old Arkansas Egg Farm land owned by Ted Darragh of 4 Sand Bar Lane.
