"It doesn't matter if it's refereeing football or council business, Brad's going to do his homework," Shinall said. "He's going to be prepared."

The filing period for City Council candidates is from July 25 to noon Aug. 15. No other candidate has announced for the position. The election is Nov. 4.

Bruns is the chairman of the council's finance and parks and recreation committees. He has worked with Mayor Doug Sprouse to create more city parks through the bond program approved by voters in 2012, according to a news release.

Bruns helped shepherd the purchase of 200 acres of park land, the design of two new parks and engineering of the sites, he said. Bids should soon be awarded for construction of the parks.

"I'm dedicated to continue to be diligent in doing all we can do to make Springdale better," Bruns said.

As Finance Committee chairman, Bruns said he has benefited from his work with the University of Arkansas Police where he oversaw the budgeting process. His experience has helped the city operate more efficiently, according to a news release.

"I will continue to look for opportunities to make Springdale even more business-friendly and improve the quality of life for our residents," Bruns said.

Springdale projects Bruns worked on include the new Walmart store; a new home for the Criminal Investigation Division of the Police Department; new bleachers and covers at the Tyson and J.B. Hunt ballparks; security fences for Tyson Park around the Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth fields; and purchase of properties to further the enhancement of the Downtown Springdale Revitalization, according to the release.

Bruns served as president of the Arkansas chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates, Springdale Kiwanis, and is a member of Cross Church and the Springdale Rotary Club.

"I still believe it is crucial for a council person to know and understand the history of Springdale to be able to help lead it in the future," Bruns said. "Springdale is moving forward in such a positive direction now, but we still have more work to do. Our best years are definitely ahead."
