Earth Day Blossoms With Opportunities

The Earth Day Network at earthday.org has counted more than 1 billion "acts of green" worldwide. Several new ones will take place this week in Northwest Arkansas.

Earth Day, a global day of ecology and preservation, is April 22 this year.

Here are some related events taking place in the region:

• The 10th annual Earth Day Celebration at the World Peace Wetland Prairie in south Fayetteville takes place 1-5 p.m. Sunday. At the event will be music, nature games, face painting and more. INFO -- 444-6072.

• Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art provides the opportunity to discover the museum grounds during a free Earth Day Celebration from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. April 26. The event includes hands-on activities and a performance by Toucan Jam. Later that same day, Crystal Bridges' Art Night Out party carries an Earth Day theme. Art Night Out takes place from 8 to 11 p.m. Included are art projects, music by Elephant Revival and appetizers. Tickets are $20 for the general public and $16 for members. INFO -- 418-5700.

• Although Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area conducted many of its Earth Day events on April 12, it will offer two sessions of an Earth Day Cruise this weekend. The cruise departs from Rocky Branch Marina at 2 p.m. and lasts for about 90 minutes. Lifejackets are provided, and preregistration is required. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6 to 12. INFO -- 789-5000.

• Events take place all day and all over Eureka Springs during that town's Celebration & Clean Up. Starting at 8 a.m. Tuesday with a volunteer registration at Pine Mountain Village, events include clean up efforts, tree planting and a mayoral declaration. INFO -- 253-7333.

• The Earth Day Vendor Fair at the University of Arkansas takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday on the lawn outside the Arkansas Union building on the Fayetteville campus. About 30 local businesses and organizations will be present. INFO -- [email protected]
