FOOTBALL 49ers LB Smith arrested

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport after authorities said he became belligerent during a security screening and threatened that he had a bomb. LAPD Sgt. Michael Fox said Smith was booked Sunday afternoon. Airport police Sgt. Karla Ortiz said Smith, 24, was randomly selected for a secondary screening at Terminal 1. Ortiz said Smith became uncooperative with the process and told a TSA agent that he had a bomb before walking to the gate. When airport police officers caught up with him, Ortiz said Smith became uncooperative and was taken into custody. A video on TMZ.com shows Smith exchanging words with an officer as he was being handcuffed. The 49ers said in a statement that the team was disappointed to learn about the incident.BASEBALL Beltre put on 15-day DL

Adrian Beltre is getting some extra time to recover from a strained left quad after the Texas Rangers put their third baseman on the 15-day disabled list Sunday. The move came just before the series finale against Houston, when newly acquired right-hander Hector Noesi was added to the Rangers roster. Beltre hasn’t played since coming out of Tuesday’s game at Boston. His DL move is retroactive to Wednesday, and he could be eligible to come off the DL as early as April 24, a day off for Texas. General Manager Jon Daniels had said this weekend that the team was going to be cautious with the 35-year-old Beltre to make sure the quad didn’t become a lingering problem. Beltre has dealt with several leg issues during his four seasons with the Rangers, though he has proven is ability to keep playing despite them. Manager Ron Washington said Beltre came out of a workout Saturday with no issues. Beltre was supposed to go through another workout Sunday, but was unable to because it was raining and the protective tarp remained on the field until an hour before the game started. “He was able to go out, he was gung-ho,” Washington said. “He thought we should move the tarp and let him go out there.” Noesi was acquired Saturday from Seattle for a player to be named or cash. He was designated for assignment April 4.

BASKETBALL Source: Dumars out

A person familiar with the situation said the Detroit Pistons have decided not to renew Joe Dumars’ contract as president of basketball operations. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not made any announcement on Dumars’ future, said Dumars will remain with the Pistons as an adviser. Dumars was named the 2003 executive of the year, and the Pistons won the title the following season, adding the 2004 crown to the two they won when Dumars was a player. But Detroit hasn’t made the playoffs since 2009, and the retooled Pistons flopped badly this season. Detroit has one of the game’s top young big men in Andre Drummond, but he’s one of the franchise’s few bright spots at the moment.

Clemson backup guard Adonis Filer plans to transfer from the Tigers after the spring semester. Clemson Coach Brad Brownell announced Filer’s intentions Sunday. Filer was a sophomore from Chicago who played 66 games in his career, mostly as a backup. He averaged 3.9 points a game this past season, helping the Tigers advance to the NIT semifinals and finish 23-13. Filer had hoped to break into the Tigers lineup as starting pointguard, but played behind junior Rod Hall. Hall has one more year remaining while the Tigers have signed the AP’s player of the year in North Carolina in high-scoring point guard Gabe DeVoe.

GOLF Ortiz wins in Mexico

Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz won the El Bosque Mexico Championship on Sunday for his second Web.com Tour victory of the season. The 22-year-old former North Texas player closed with a 4-under 68 at El Bosque Country Club for a two-stroke victory over Justin Thomas. Ortiz finished at 13-under 275. Ortiz, the Panama Claro Championship winner last month, earned $126,000 to jump from second to first on the money list with $304,458 - well over the amount needed to earn a PGA Tour spot next season as a top-25 finisher. From Guadalajara, Ortiz rebounded from an opening 74 with rounds of 67 and 66 for a share of the third-round lead with Nathan Green. Ortiz played the first 15 holes in 5 under Sunday, then bogeyed Nos. 16 and 17 before closing with a birdie on the par-5 18th. Thomas finished with a 69. Green, from Australia, had a 74 to drop into a tie for third at 7 under with Adam Hadwin, Jason Gore, Daniel Berger, Nathan Tyler and Jonathan Randolph.

MOTOR SPORTS Conway holds off Dixon

Mike Conway won the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, grabbing the lead when Scott Dixon was forced to stop for fuel two laps from the finish. Conway was the surprise winner of a race that took a dramatic turn when leader Ryan Hunter-Reay triggered a seven-car accident 24 laps from the finish. Hunter-Reay had dominated but was chasing Josef Newgarden after Newgarden exited pit road ahead of Hunter-Reay and James Hinchcliffe. Hunter-Reay tried to make an aggressive pass in the fourth turn and instead hit Newgarden. The accident wiped out Hunter-Reay, Hinchcliffe and Newgarden, damaged Helio Castroneves’ car, then collected Takuma Sato, Tony Kanaan and Jack Hawksworth. It opened the door for Dixon to win, but he conceded to Conway when he had to stop for fuel.

MARATHON

Kipsang sets course record

World-record holder Wilson Kipsang won the London Marathon for the second time on Sunday, producing a course-record time to see off a strong field despite arriving late in the British capital after his passport was stolen. The 32-year old Kenyan completed the 26.2-mile (42.2-kilometer) route in 2 hours, 4 minutes, 29 seconds - 11 seconds inside the previous fastest run in London by Emmanuel Mutai in 2011. “I was really feeling good and I controlled the guys” said Kipsang, who also won the 2012 race. Compatriot Stanley Biwott was 26 seconds adrift in second, and deposed London champion Tsegaye Kebede was just over two minutes behind Kipsang in third, but it was a disappointing full marathon debut for Mo Farah. In a city bathed in sunshine, Londoners came out to cheer the home favorite only to see him finish eighth, almost four minutes behind Kipsang. But despite failing to match his track feats in the city in 2012, when he won the 5,000 and 10,000 meter-titles at the Olympics, Farah will return for another shot at the marathon. Before Kipsang’s dominating performance, there was a sprint finish in the women’s race in front of Buckingham Palace, and two-time world champion Edna Kiplagat won at her fourth attempt. After twice finishing second in London, the 34-year-old Kenyan completed in 2:20:21 - 3 seconds ahead of compatriot and namesake, Florence Kiplagat.

Pre-race favorite Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya won the Rotterdam Marathon on Sunday, but failed in his bid to break the course record on a windy day in the port city. Kipchoge ran the final 4 miles on his own through the streets of Rotterdam to finish in exactly 2 hours, 5 minutes. Fellow Kenyan Bernard Koech was second in 2:06:07. Organizers had hoped to break the course record of 2:04:27 set in 2009 by the Kenyans Duncan Kibet and James Kwambai, but pacemakers dropped out regularly as wind hindered the runners.
