Rogers Heritage

War Eagles Split Squad

Rogers Heritage track coaches wanted to give their athletes more opportunities, so boys coach Jay Miles took a group to Alma on Friday, while some went to Fayetteville with girls coach Jeff Shaw with mixed results.

"I took the sprinters and field event people to Alma, while the distance crew and some others went to Fayetteville with coach Shaw," Miles said.

Junior Joey Saucier topped the qualifying standard in the 100 meters, but it was just above the legal wind. Miles was pleased with the

boys 4x800 relay team even though they just missed the state qualifying standard at Fayetteville. Senior Woodrow Murray, who was second in the 3200, led the distance relay crew along with junior Mason Wolfe and seniors Javier Aguirre and William Reyes.

"They came up short, but it showed they can compete with the other teams, so that's good," Miles said. "Senior Alex Steiner ran a 2:06 in the open 800 at Alma.

Faith Von Gremp also lowered her own school record in the 100 in 13.23 at Alma.

Senior Daniel Spickes, the defending Class 7A state champion in the pole vault, didn't jump at Alma, but ran the 200 and 110 hurdles and competed in the high jump to prepare for the Arkansas High School Decathlon in which he finished second a year ago.

"He got down to the low 16s in the hurdles and if he gets down a little bit more, he could be a factor in that event," Miles said.

Wildcats Look Strong

The Springdale Har-Ber boys had a strong showing with a fourth-place finish at the Bulldog Relays in Fayetteville.

Aaron Featherston took first place in the 300 hurdles in a time of 41.01 and was the anchor on Har-Ber's winning 4X400 relay team. Noah Antony took second in the 800-meter run in a time of 2:02.88 and ran a leg on Har-Ber's winning 4X800 relay team.

Josh Frazier won first place in the shot put with a throw of 51-4.5 and Peyton Powell finished third in the 400 in 51.01.

"Peyton Powell went from 52.08 to 51.01 and that was good to see," Har-Ber coach Wayne Hall said. "Aaron pulled a hamstring during indoor and this was only his third meet. Having him back gives us an extra edge. We also won the 4X8 without Peyton Wood, who was sick, and that was good to see as well. We're still putting the pieces together, but it was a good meet."

The Lady Wildcats finished second in the team standings behind Bentonville, which won both the boys and girls divisions. Payton Stumbaugh reset meet records in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles and the 200 while Amanda Dillon set a meet record in the 400 in a time of 55.55.

Tigers Excel In Field Events

Bentonville girls coach Randy Ramaker said what caught his attention the most during the Bulldog Relays was how well his athletes performed in field events Friday night in Fayetteville.

Logan Morton won the triple jump with a meet-record leap of 36 feet, 5 inches as part of a Bentonville one-two-four finish, then the Lady Tigers took the top three spots in the long jump, with Taylor Mahone's leap of 17-4 leading the way.

"We did some great field events," Ramaker said. "Mahone, of course, in the long jump since she won, but we had two girls that had PRs in the shot put. The triple jump was good, and the pole vault was strong.

"We were solid all over, but specifically in the jumps and the throws, those were the biggest good things."

Morganne Johnston took second in the shot put with her toss of 35-4.4, while LeeAnn Mitchell finishes fourth at 34-2.5. Isabel Neal and Jade Donnell finished second and third, respectively, in the pole vault by clearing 11-0 and 10-6, respectively.

Ramaker said the Bulldog Relays served a dual purpose. It gave those who will compete this weekend in the Kansas Relays one last tuneup, while he also allowed some of his athletes to do something a little differently.

Lady Bulldog Throwers Excelling

Another impressive performance by sophomore Ryann Goodsell highlighted a strong day for the Springdale High girls throwers Friday at the Fayetteville Bulldog Relays.

Goodsell, the defending state champion in the discus, won the event by almost 25 feet with a 130-1 throw. She also finished third (34.35) in the shot put, but wasn't the only Springdale thrower to have a strong performance as throwers accounted for 26 of Springdale's 43 points in a fifth-place finish.

Sophomore Tylee Sysavanh finished fifth in the discus (96-3) and shot put (34-1.5), while Deja Davis was sixth in the shot put (33-4.5).

"We are very fortunate to have a hard working throwing crew where every week we have multiple athletes that are capable of placing," track assistant Ronnie Waid said.

Mounties Claim Three Golds

The Mounties recorded three victories while finishing third at the Fayetteville Bulldog Relays Friday.

Brandon Workman continued his dominance in the long jump with a winning leap of 22-5.50. Workman also finished third in the 100 (11.22) and fourth in the 200 (23.33).

Several Rogers runners also turned in strong performances in the 800 and 1,600 runs. Taylor Bryant won the 1,600 in a 4:29.38 while teammate Austin Salazar was second in 4:30.77. Mounties runner Christian Liddell won the 800 in 2:00.53 while Ian Smith was third in a 2:03.00.

Jose Campos ran a personal best 52.38 in the 400.

Lady Mounties runner Lisa Lauschke ran a strong race in the girls 800 with a fifth-place finish in 2:30.87.

"It was a really good race for Lisa because this was the first time she had run the 800 this year," Rogers coach Becky Efurd said. "I was very excited about her time."

Efurd said she was also pleased with the efforts of Leigh Leigh Campbell and Amber Turner in the high jump. Both Lady Mounties cleared 4-10 in the event.
