Keep Investigating The Questions

In response to Rod Greig's viewpoint regarding contradictions throughout the Bible, I share with him that the Bible can indeed be difficult to understand and appear contradictory, but where one sees contradictions, it is often not digging into the context where challenges arise. While all 66 books that make up the Bible are ordained by God, they are written by man. And just as today there are multiple viewpoints of the same event, we find that also in the Bible. While I see a partly sunny day, you might see it as partly cloudy.

One of the examples Mr. Greig uses are the multiple statements regarding the effect of a parent's sin on a child. But there is no discrepancy when you realize that in one case the Bible states that only the parent is held accountable for the sin itself, and will be judged for that sin. The perceived contradiction is that while a child is not held accountable for the sin itself, they do realize the repercussions of it. An example of that today is that a child of a violent alcoholic does not share in any of the physical repercussions of drinking, but may have to live out a life filled with abuse within the home of this person.

Another example was whether Jesus was a man of peace or not. Of course Jesus was a man of peace and demonstrated love and compassion throughout scripture, but he realized that he would cause much discord and animosity between people. Jesus even states that belief in him would rip apart families, which we see to this day.

I often share in the challenges of understanding everything found in the Bible, but as a person of faith, have found that in time answers come to light as I continue to dig. Continue to challenge, read and seek the counsel of others, this is how to find answers to our questions.
