Circuit Judge Karren injured in bicycling accident

Circuit Judge Brad Karren was injured Sunday in bicycling accident and is being treated in a Missouri hospital.

Karren was riding his bicycle along the Compton Gardens' trails with his son when Karren was involved in an accident.

Information concerning Karren's accident was posted Sunday on his Facebook page. The judge's was described as being alert and in stable condition, according to the Facebook posting.

Karren was airlifted from Northwest Medical Center to Mercy's emergency trauma center in Springfield, according to his wife.

Anita Karren, the judge's wife, said on Monday that her husband's prognosis is excellent. She said there are fractures in her husband's neck, but his neurosurgeon believes there is no spinal cord or brain damage.

Karren remains in the intensive care unit and the medical team were installing a comprehensive neck stabilization device, his wife said.

Anita Karren said if the procedure goes well, the medical team predicts that her husband may be released from the hospital within the week to return home.

Retired Judge David Clinger filled in today for Karren and Clinger will be on the bench the remainder of the week.

According to dispatch records, paramedics were dispatched at 1:58 p.m. Sunday to the bike trail north or Northeast A and Seventh Streets. They left the scene at 2:23 p.m.
