SUN BELT LA.-LAFAYETTE 5, UALR 2

Blake Trahan went 2 for 3 and scored a run, Tyler Girouard hit a two-run single and Louisiana-Lafayette (33-4, 13-1 Sun Belt Conference) beat UALR (13-19, 3-11) on Saturday at Tigue Moore Field in Lafayette, La.

The Trojans pulled within 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning as Bryson Thionnet doubled and later scored on a throwing error by Ragin’ Cajuns pitcher Ryan Wilson. But Louisiana-Lafayette scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to extend its lead to 5-1. Trahan was hit by a pitch and Ryan Leonards walked to begin the inning. Trahan and Leonards came home on Girouard’s two-run single. Seth Harrison later hit an RBI single to score Girouard.

Drew Merten scored on a throwing error by Louisiana-Lafayette shortstop Trahan to cut the lead to 5-2. But Sam Vogel struck out swinging to end the inning.

Wilson improved to 5-0, allowing 1 run on 4 hits, striking out 2 and walking 1. Greg Milhorn pitched four innings of relief to earn his first save of the season.

Justin Steelmon led the Trojans offensively, going 2 for 4.

ARKANSAS STATE 7, SOUTH ALABAMA 6, 14 INN.

Matt Burgess’ sacrifice fly in the top of the 14th inning gave Arkansas State (19-16, 9-5 Sun Belt Conference) the lead and Michael Croft pitched a hitless bottom of the inning to preserve the Red Wolves’ victory over South Alabama (16-18, 5-8) at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala.

The Red Wolves trailed 6-4 in the eighth inning when they scored two runs to tie the game at 6-6. Derek Birginske hit an RBI triple to score Burgess, who led off the inning with a single. Stuart Levy tied the game with a run-scoring single, scoring Birginske.

Tanner Gaines earned the victory,pitching 6 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He allowed 2 hits, struck out 1 and walked 1.

SOUTHLAND NICHOLLS STATE 3, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 2

Phillip Lyons hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning as Nicholls State (19-18, 10-4 Southland Conference) beat Central Arkansas (17-15, 6-8) at Ray E. Didier Field in Thibodaux, La.

Grand Borne started for the Colonels, scattering 7 hits over 7 innings, allowing 2 runs. John Satriano (2-1) didn’t allow a hit in two innings of relief.

Chris Caudle (5-3) took the loss, going 8 1/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Carson Dowdle hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning and Scott Zimmerle’s RBI single in the sixth inning were the Bears’ only runs.

Chris Townsend finished 2 for 4 and scored 2 runs to lead the Bears.

SWAC SOUTHERN 4-16, UAPB 3-17

Arkansas-Pine Bluff (11-22, 11-5 Southwestern Athletic Conference) and Southern University (6-17, 2-10) split their doubleheader at Torii Hunter Baseball Complex in Pine Bluff, with the Golden Lions losing 4-3 in the first game before winning 17-16 in the second game.

In the first game, UAPB blew a 3-0 lead. Southern scored three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game at 3-3 and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth on Sean Washington’s home run off Dixon Marble (0-1).

UAPB scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth to overcome a 16-11 deficit in the second game. Vladimir Gomez went 5 for 5 with a home run, 7 RBI and scored 4 runs to lead the Golden Lions.
