Rotarians unite to fight polio

Some 400 NorthWest Arkansas Community College Foundation supporters helped the college "Plant a Seed" on April 3 at the John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers.

The 11th annual benefit dinner yielded some $100,000 to help the school provide scholarships for tuition and books to its students.

The foundation recognizes area leaders at the fundraiser who are selected as Quality of Life Honorees for "their contributions in helping to build and sustain the exceptional quality of life we enjoy in Northwest Arkansas."

The 2014 Quality of Life Honorees are:

m Northwest Arkansas Rotary Clubs (Bella Vista Sunrise, Bentonville, Bentonville/Bella Vista Daybreak, Fayetteville, Northside Fayetteville, Rogers, Rogers Early Risers, Siloam Springs, Springdale).

Speakers for the evening included Ric Clifford, chairman of the school's board of trustees, Mike Luttrell, officer of the foundation board of directors, and Raul Najera-Bahena, a second-year student who will graduate in May with an associate of science degree in business.

Those helping the school plant seeds included college President Evelyn and Chuck Jorgenson, Melba Shewmaker, Linda and David Thrasher, Sue and David Van Bebber, Nancy and Dick Trammel, Kim and Jerry Vest, Joe Spivey, Joan and Ed Clifford, Becky Paneitz, Denise and Hershey Garner, Dayle and Dan Shewmaker, Kim and Bill Rowell, Kelly Zega, Sheri Rothwell and Woody Bassett.

Northwest Arkansans Rotarians had a busy week as they gathered two evenings later on April 5 for Everybody Wins! End Polio Now at the Pauline Whitaker Arena in Fayetteville.

Some 500 Rotarians and friends helped raise more than $40,000. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match event proceeds two to one in support of Rotary International's goal of eradicating polio worldwide. Only three countries still have polio -- Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.

The casual carnival-themed benefit included raffles, games, prizes, carnival food, a silent auction and live music from Ultra Suede.
