Bentonville Man Found Unconscious In Benton County Jail

BENTONVILLE -- A Bentonville man is listed in critical condition in an area hospital after being found unconscious and not breathing in a Benton County Jail cell.

Jared Parks, 23, is in the Northwest Medical Center-Bentonville intensive care unit, said Rob Holly, chief deputy with the Sheriff's Office.

Parks, 23, was arrested by Bentonville police and brought to the jail at 9 p.m. Tuesday. An intake deputy was concerned about Parks' condition, which included dilated eyes, Holly said. A booking supervisor refused to accept Parks into the jail and police took him to the hospital, Holly said.

Holly said deputies wanted Parks checked out by doctors before accepting him into the jail.

Police returned with Parks a few hours later and he was booked into the jail, Holly said.

An intake deputy continued to check on Parks throughout the night, Holly said.

The deputy found Parks unconscious and not breathing during a 5 a.m. check, Holly said.

The deputy summoned for help and deputies began CPR and used a defibrillator until paramedics arrived, Holly said.

Paramedics then took over the emergency aid and they were able to find a pulse, Holly said.

The incident remains under investigation and the Arkansas State Police may be asked to head the investigation, Holly said.
