Weather service: Storms possible in state Friday, Sunday

Scattered thunderstorms, some of which could be severe, are expected this weekend as two cold fronts push through the state Friday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Little Rock.

Warning Coordination Meteorologist John Robinson said in an email Thursday that a weak cold front should bring scattered thunderstorms to northern Arkansas on Friday afternoon and evening, but the risk for severe weather appears "rather low." Robinson added that large hail would be the main threat if those storms were to become severe.

After a dry Saturday, chances for severe weather will increase Sunday afternoon and night in central and southern Arkansas counties when a stronger cold front moves through the state from the northwest, according to the weather service.

"I do think some severe thunderstorm warnings will become necessary," Robinson said.

Robinson said in addition to 1-2 inches of rain, damaging winds and large hail will be the main threats with Sunday's storms. However, isolated tornadoes "cannot be ruled out at this point," he said.
