Herron marks 95th birthday

Mildred Herron of Rogers will celebrate her 95th birthday with a party Saturday at the Freewill Baptist Church in Rogers.

Herron was born April 13, 1919, in Springdale. She is the mother of six and has numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

She enjoys gardening, working in her yard and making quilts in the wintertime.

Fayetteville seniors scholarship finalists

Nine Fayetteville High School seniors have been named finalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship contest.

Madeleine Corbell, Addison Cornwell, Spencer Finney, Annabelle Hall, Ben Heil, Arron Koch, Laura Mantooth, Emma Mathes and Amanda Roberson were recognized by the prestigious scholarship organization. Winners of National Merit Scholarships will be notified through mid-June if they are selected to receive a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship, a corporate-sponsored scholarship or a college-sponsored scholarship.

Mora studies at NASA Center

Danny Mora of Rogers, a student at NorthWest Arkansas Community College, was recently selected to travel to NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., to participate in the National Community College Aerospace Scholars project.

Mora was one of 40 community and junior college students chosen for the program. Mora is in the Educationally Managed Projects Advancing Curriculum Technology/Teamwork and Service Tech Corp program at NWACC. Mora had the opportunity to work with robotics along with NASA engineers during the three-day visit.

The visit included a tour of facilities and briefings with NASA experts.

Fort Smith DECA places at conference

DECA groups from Northside and Southside high schools in Fort Smith participated in the State Career Development Conference March 10-11 in Springdale.

Shadow O'Hare from Southside High School placed first in the restaurant food services management category.

Hornsey honored for fundraising

Spencer Hornsey has been the top fundraiser for the American Heart Association at Westwood Elementary School in Springdale since he was in first grade.

This year, Hornsey broke his own record by raising $650. The school raised $2,626.11 during the Jump Rope for Heart event in their physical education classes.

Rogers High DECA wins

The Rogers High School DECA Club received two of the highest national DECA achievement awards at the State DECA Leadership and Competitive Events Conference.

The chapter received the Promotional Campaign and Community Service awards. In addition, the school's club received recognition for having led all state DECA chapters in money raised for charities.

Edith Gonzalez and Chanel Mora, both students at George Junior High School in Springdale, recently qualified to compete in the National Family Career and Community Leaders of America Conference July 6-10 in San Antonio, Texas.

Their project used Hunger Games to relate to the problem of hunger in the United States.

Fort Smith quiz, science teams win

Quiz Bowl and Science Bowl teams from Ramsey Junior High School in Fort Smith have won state competitions this year.

The school's Quiz Bowl team placed first in the Arkansas State Quiz Bowl Junior High 7A Red Bracket Tournament on Feb. 22. Team members Huy Mai and Dani Mays were named to the 7A All-Star Tournament team, and Mai was named MVP.

Team members include captain Nathan Barker, Gwendolyn Daniels, Mai, Mays, Nathan Moore, Luke Smith, Jason Weiler, Kirk Linam, Alexander Siebenmorgen and Tommy Huynh. The team is coached by Teresa Freeman and Gia Bethel.

Three Science Bowl teams from the school swept the Arkansas Regional Middle School Science Bowl Tournament in January at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.

The first-place team includes captain Daniels, Siebenmorgen, Katie Settle, Nate English and Flor Ortega. The team will compete in the U.S. Department of Energy National Science Bowl this month in Chevy Chase, Md.

Second place went to a team including captain Annabelle Dickson, Tanya Joseph, J.T. Jones, Jenna Hunter and Emma Espino. The third-place team was comprised of captain Ashley Floyd, Georgie Mings, Miranda Lee, Haley Grimes and Dan Tran.
