— An election will be needed May 20 to determine who will fill the Ward 2 seat on the Siloam Springs Board of Directors.

Brad Burns and Bob Highfill will meet in the runoff because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote Tuesday, according to unofficial election results.

Burns received 49 votes or about 45 percent of the vote to Highfill's 38 votes or 35 percent. Luke Wahlgren got 16 votes or almost 15 percent of the vote. Ken Kloet received five votes or nearly 5 percent of the vote. Only 110 people voted in the special election.

"I thought they were all good candidates," Burns said. "I look forward to the runoff."

"This is a good sign for the city of Siloam," Highfill said. "It can't be all bad for the administration. Everybody's fairly content with the way it's going."

"I'm not surprised at the two top runners," Kloet said. "I'm glad four other people voted for me." He plans run again in November.

"I got my name out there, and I'm proud of that," Wahlgren said. He said some people were frustrated about having to drive outside the city to vote. The polling site for precinct 7 was nearly to Gentry.

"I wish more people would've turned out," Wahlgren said.

Only voters who live in the ward could vote in the election. The ward includes the northeast section of the city.

The candidate who wins the election will serve out the remainder of James Fuller's term, set to expire Dec. 31. The position will be up for election again in November. The seat became vacant Fuller died Nov. 19. Fuller had served as Ward 2 director for more than 25 years.

Directors receive $220 per meeting or about $5,280 annually if they attend each of the 24 regular meetings.
