Rogers Outlasts Springdale Har-Ber

— Rogers' ability to put together runs Tuesday was the difference against Springdale Har-Ber.

Rogers bunched together five runs in the middle innings to defeat Har-Ber 6-4 in 7A/6A-West Conference play at Hunt's Park. The Lady Mounties (4-8, 2-2) scored two runs in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth inning on four hits.

Rogers took advantage of some wildness by Har-Ber relief pitcher Gracie Bogle, who had two wild pitches and two walks in the fifth. Bogle was replaced in the inning by Emily Stockalper, the starting pitcher. Callie King and Maddy Prough delivered consecutive sacrifice flies and another run scored when Har-Ber catcher Tiffani Ray was off the plate on an attempted forceout at home.

Haylee Zimmerman earned the pitching victory with relief help from Prough, a freshman.

"I was real proud of the way we hit the ball hard," Rogers coach Mike Harper said. "They had to make plays in the outfield. We made only one base running mistake the whole time, but we overcame that one."

Har-Ber (10-6, 1-3) lost the game despite home runs by Bogle and Kylie Buttram, who added a two-run single. Ray was also 4 for 4 at the plate.

"We hit the ball well enough to win the game if we don't give up those freebies," Har-Ber coach Lynn Lawson said. "We put some people on base without making them hit the ball and we didn't have enough clutch hitting."

Bogle pounded her third home run of the season and Buttram hit a two-run single to tie the game 3-3 in the fourth inning. But Rogers was able to regain the lead with three runs on only one hit in the fifth.

Haley Zimmerman pitched until the sixth when Prough took over and picked up the save. The freshman right-hander was particularly impressive in the seventh when she faced the top of the Har-Ber lineup.

Prough struck out Stockalper and Hannah Sharum before Ray singled to left field to keep Har-Ber alive. That brought up Morgan Neal, one of the top hitters in the league. But Prough got the left-handed hitter on a fly ball to right field to end the game.

"All four of those girls who batted in that inning can play," Harper said. "(Prough) came in and shut the door down. Haylee, she did a really good job of hitting her spots with her pitches. She also played her position real well on defense. It was a good job overall by the whole team."
