— Maya Angelou won't be appearing at the public library Friday because of an unexpected health ailment, according to a news release.

The event is canceled and won't be rescheduled. Ticket holders will be notified via email, according to David Johnson, library executive director.

"We are disheartened about the decision to cancel, but we understand Dr. Angelou's health concerns and we wish her a speedy recovery," Johnson said in the release.

"I am profoundly saddened that I am unable to be with you on Friday. I long to come to the state of Arkansas, in general, and I long to be in Fayetteville, in particular. I learned in Arkansas at a very young age from my grandmother who taught me, 'when you learn, teach and when you get, give'," Angelou wrote in a statement.
