WEIGHTLIFTING

Booneville, Fountain Lake defend titles Booneville and Fountain Lake defended their titles in thestate high school weightlifting championships Saturday at Dover High School.

Booneville won the Class 4A title with a total of 4,880 pounds (lifts in the bench press and power clean) in 10 weight divisions. Fountain Lake had a total of 4,715 pounds to repeat as Class 3A champion.

Other winners were Rogers Heritage in Class 7A/6A (4,710), Wynne in Class 5A (a meet-best 5,060) and Junction City in Class 2A (5,035).

Senior Bijhon Jackson of El Dorado repeated as champion of the heavyweight division with a total weight of 770pounds - 410 in the bench press and a meet-record 360 in the power clean.

Jackson, as a 320-pound interior defensive lineman, helped the Wildcats win Class 6A state championships in 2011 and 2013. He will be a freshman this fall at Arkansas.

Senior Dalton Gray, a standout two-way lineman on Booneville’s unbeaten Class 4A state championship football team last fall, bench-pressed 365 pounds and power-cleaned 300 pounds in the 259-pound division.

BOXING Golden Gloves set

The Mid-South Golden Gloves championship tournament will take place Thursday-Saturday at the North Little Rock Community Center, 2700 Willow St., in North Little Rock.

The tournament will feature champions from Memphis, West Tennessee, Middle Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas.

The winner of the open division of the Mid-South tournament will advance to the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas on May 12-17.

Bouts will begin at 7 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults and $6 for students.

BASKETBALL Arkansas’ Peak leads All-Star game

Keira Peak just wanted to show off her trademark hustle one last time.

Peak, the lone senior for the University of Arkansas, scored a game-high 36 points, leading the Black squad to a 75-69 victory over the White side in the women’s version of the Arkansas College Basketball All-Star Game on Saturday afternoon at Summit Arena in Hot Springs.

Ouachita Baptist’s Nashia James led the White squad, consisting of all NCAA Division II players coached by Hot Springs Mayor Ruth Carney, with 31 points, scoring 20 in the second half. James was the lone Arkansas native in the game, hailing from Watson Chapell.

Peak had 13 points by halftime to lead all scorers. James had 11 at the break for the White team.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Christina Lasane added 18 points for the Black squad with 3 three-pointers. UAPB’s Marion Thompson added 10.

Harding’s Deshelle Isaac-Boyce finished with 13 points for the White team.

In the men’s game, Arkansas’ Coty Clarke, Mardracus Wade and Rickey Scott combined for 55 points, leading the North team to a 111-64 victory over the South.

Clarke helped the North put the game away with 17 second-half points and finished with 23. He scored his team’s first seven points of the half, hitting 4 of 5 three-pointers over the final 20 minutes.

Wade finished with 17 points, including 11 in the second half. Scott added 15 points.

The Razorbacks also blended seamlessly with Arkansas State’s Kirk Van Slyke, Ed Townsel and Brandon Reed. Van Slyke scored 23 points, scoring 17 in the first half.

Townsel finished with 13 points, and Reed had 12.

Arkansas-Monticello’s Brandon Wilson led the South with 18 points. He scored 14 points in the first half, scoring 10 of his team’s first 17 points.

TRACK AND FIELD Razorbacks win three event titles

Arkansas won three events at the Arkansas Spring Invitational at John McDonnell Field on Saturday in Fayetteville.

Tomas Squella won the 1,500 meters in 3 minutes, 48.73 seconds with Andrew Pisechko finishing second in 3:40.20. Pete Mirocke won the javelin with a 216 feet, 9 inches. Andrew Irwin won the pole vault by clearing 17-¾ .

GOLF Arkansas women win twice

Arkansas won two matches Saturday at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga.

Arkansas defeated Denver 3 ½ -1 ½ with Regina Plasencia defeating Isabel Southard 3 and 2. Emma Lavy defeated Jessica Caty 3 and 2 and Gabriela Lopez defeated Tonje Daffinrud 3 and 2. Summar Roachell ended all square in her match, while Emily Tubert lost her match.

Arkansas defeated Mississippi State 3-2 with Plasencia defeating Mary Langdon Gallagher 3 and 1. Tubert defeated Jessica Peng 2 and 1 and Lopez defeated Ally McDonald 1 up.

Arkansas will meet Southern California in today’s championship match.

Razorbacks men in eighth place

Arkansas is in eighth place after two rounds of the Aggie Invitational in Bryan, Texas, with a 606.

Arkansas shot a 305 in the first round and a 301 in the second and trails LSU by 15 strokes.

Taylor Moore is in 13th place for the Razorbacks after shooting a 148 (75-73). Zach Coats is 23rd with a 151 (77-74).
