City proclaims Purple Heart

On March 18, during the Fayetteville City Council meeting, Mayor Lioneld Jordan proclaimed the city of Fayetteville as a Purple Heart City.

The purpose of the Purple Heart Trail and City program is to create a symbolic and honorary system of cities, highways, roads, bridges and other monuments that give tribute to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces that have been awarded the Purple Heart medal. Since August 2013, five cities in Arkansas -- Marvell, Helena-West Helena, Jonesboro, Little Rock and Rogers -- have been designated Purple Heart Cities. Locally, Interstate 540 is designated as part of the national Purple Heart Trail system.

During the proclamation ceremony, Jose Martinez, commander, Department of Arkansas, Military Order of the Purple Heart, presented Jordan with a plaque. In addition, Chuck Adkins, junior vice commander, MOPH Chapter 460, Fayetteville, presented Jordan with a certificate of appreciation for the support the city of Fayetteville has provided its veterans.
