SPRINGDALE -- Taylor Wyatt scored off Bianca Barroso's corner kick less than 10 minutes into Springdale High's match against Siloam Springs on Friday.

The senior midfielder scored her second goal off Stephanie Long's corner kick with 5:52 left in the opening half. And that was enough cushion for sophomore goalkeeper Tegan Hendrix and the Lady Bulldogs defense as Springdale cruised to a 2-0 win in a 7A/6A-West Conference showdown.

Hendrix and Springdale (5-7, 1-1) faced a few threats in the second half, but were able to keep Siloam Springs (6-5, 0-1) from scoring each time, including several impressive plays from Hendrix to preserve the shutout.

"I think my defense tonight was really strong," Hendrix said. "We stayed connected, talked, stayed tough. Dropped back when we needed to. Overall, the communication between us was great."

Springdale earned its first conference win of the season after jumping out to the early lead on Wyatt's first-half goals.

"It's big, because in this game you never know when the other team can score," Springdale coach David McKellips said of Wyatt's goals. "The talk we had at halftime was bend a little, but don't break on defense. And then Tegan stepped up and played a great game at goalie. She saved our tails a few times."

Siloam Springs couldn't take advantage of any opportunities despite controlling the ball for most of the second half, going scoreless in a frustrating defeat in its conference opener.

"I feel like we controlled three-quarters of the game, which has been kind of the results in the last few games when we've played some good, quality competition," Siloam Springs coach Jason Bowen said. "We're just not finding the final result when we get the ball in front of the goal. I feel like we played a great match, just gave a couple corners up."

The victory should pay dividends for Springdale, which bounced back from a 3-0 home loss to Rogers in the conference opener Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs will play at Green Forest on Friday.

"It's awesome," Hendrix said of the win. "As a team, we've come a really long way. So definitely our first conference win, we're all happy for it."

BOYS

Seniors Erick Batres and Enrique Martinez scored goals for Springdale High as the Bulldogs shut out Siloam Springs 2-0 to rebound strongly from a penalty-kicks loss to Rogers High in its conference opener.

Batres put Springdale (6-2-1, 1-1) on the board early when he scored less than 15 minutes into the first half, while Martinez' goal provided insurance and stretched the lead to 2-0 at the 37:20 mark in the second half.

Siloam Springs (7-3, 0-1) failed to get many good shots at the goal against a stifling Springdale defense that played well throughout after failing to maintain a lead twice against Rogers.

Springdale will compete in the prestigious Williamson County Versus Tournament in Nashville, Tenn., beginning Thursday.
