By the end of the Renaissance and Fantasy Faire of the Ozarks on Sunday, Marie de Guise, Duchess of Longueville, will decide if she will marry King James V of Scotland or Henry VIII of England.
The faire is set in 1537 in a fictitious English village that is "a day's walk from Stonehenge," says Margaret Rivera, general manager of the event. Rivera will also be portraying Marie de Guise at the festival, which will be held Saturday and Sunday at Washington County Fairgrounds in Fayetteville. A variety of people will be in character, and some of these characters include English and Scottish lords. She notes that her husband will be a Spanish emissary who will be playing guitar and singing.

"It's like a live performance all day long," she says.
The event will include vendors selling handmade items based on the Renaissance period, such as garments, jewelry and wooden swords and shields, Rivera says. There will also be performances by belly dancers, musicians playing Renaissance and Celtic music, a magician, a pirate show, a juggler called Crazy Boy Coy and fighting groups. The Brotherhood of Steel from Iowa will be doing fighting demonstrations with swords, she says.
Rivera says a new addition this year is the group Archery Through the Ages, who will be demonstrating how to shoot the English long bow. There will be a patron contest at 4 p.m. each day, and prizes will be awarded.
There will also be a children's realm with a crossbow area, arts and crafts, face painting, petting zoo and children's knighting, she adds. The Greenland High School has a Renaissance group that will be doing a "jail and bail," which consists of a person paying the group to incarcerate someone temporarily.
"Usually they have to do some crazy thing to get out of jail," she says.
Many food items will be available for purchase, and she says there will definitely be turkey legs.
The event is entertaining, and guests also learn a little bit of history. The storyline took a little creative license because Marie de Guise never would have toured England, but the majority of the story is based on fact, Rivera says.
"It's fun, but it's educational as well."
