— Mike Power expressed a little concern about how his Bentonville boys track team would return to action after a short spring break and no meet last week.

It only took the Tigers one event to ease their coach's worries. The team of Hunter Smithpeters, Tyrone Mahone, Keson Payton and Colter Clemence opened the Whitey Smith Relays Carnival by breaking the 4x200-meter relay during Tuesday's meet at Whitey Smith Stadium.

The four sprinters had a time of 1 minute, 30.01 seconds, breaking the previous mark of 1:31.17 set by Rogers Heritage in 2012. It was one of five meet records Bentonville broke en route to winning the team title, scoring 131 points to second-place Springdale Har-Ber's 83.

"Coming off spring break, you're always worried how your team will react after a little lull in our consistency and in our training," Power said. "We had some great performances. The sprints crew had a great day and had some great performances in the jumps."

Mahone, a sophomore, had a hand in breaking four of those meet records, capped by his performance in the final leg in the 4x400 relay. He outlasted Har-Ber's Aaron Featherston and gave Bentonville a record time of 3:25.73, breaking the previous mark of 3:27.54 set by the Tigers two years ago.

Smithpeters, a senior, and Payton, a junior, were also teammates with Mahone in the sprint medley relay and helped Bentonville turn in a record time of 1:35.53, more than 2 seconds faster than the previous mark. Mahone and Payton were also teammates in the 4x100 relay, teaming with Dylan Little and Kary Collier finish with a meet-record 42.89 seconds.

"All three help each other in practice, but they all have something to prove," Power said.

The only record the Tigers broke that didn't involve those three sprinters was the 4x110 shuttle hurdles. The team of Jordan Patrick, Conner Southern, Paul Pearson and Thor O'Connor turned in a time of 1:04.12 and snapped the previous meet mark of 1:05.47 set by Fayetteville in 2011 and tied by Heritage the following year.

Rogers High used distance events to set a pair of meet records. The team of Christian Liddell, Jose Campos, Taylor Bryant and Ian Smith broke the distance medley record with a time of 11:00 41, breaking the previous record by almost 3 seconds.

Liddell, Bryant and Smith also helped the Mounties break the 4x1,600 relay, teaming with Austin Salazar to set a time of 18:42.52. That was 23 seconds faster than the previous mark set by Bentonville in 2012.

"We were trying to qualify for the Kansas Relays, so we ran a good team in both events," Rogers coach Jim Yurwitz said. "We ran times that were faster than last year, so that should get us into the meet. We'll have to wait and see because they won't post it for a while."

The only girls record set in the meet was by Har-Ber in the sprint medley relay. The team of Emily Potts, Jenna Birkes, Payton Stumbaugh and Amanda Dillon turned in a time of 1:47.96, snapping the previous mark of 1:51.37 set by Fayetteville in 2012 and beating second-place Fayetteville by almost 13 seconds.

Stumbaugh set the tone by racing ahead of the pack in the 200, then Dillon took over in the 400 and ran away from the other teams.

"I did my best, but we had a really good first lap," Dillon said. "I just love to do relays like that because we can pull our talents together. We have girls that are good in the 100, 200 and the 400."

Five individual meet records were broken by area athletes in field events. Stumbaugh cleared 5 feet, 6 inches in the high jump and broke the meet record by 5 inches, while Springdale High's Ryann Goodsell threw the discus 131-6 and snapped the meet record by more than 16 feet.

On the boys side, Fayetteville's Blake Young threw the shot 52-6, almost a foot farther than the previous record. Meanwhile, Rogers' Brandon Workman went 47-8.5 in the triple jump, snapping the previous mark of 46-0.5 set by Bentonville DeMarcus Murphy, then broke his meet record in the long jump when he went 22-10.5, four inches more than he went two years ago.

Fort Smith Southside took the girls title in a much closer race, finishing with 83 points. Har-Ber was second with 72, followed by Rogers with 59, Springdale with 58 and Fayetteville with 50.
