100 YEARS AGO Sept. 30, 1913

Attorney General W. L. Moose yesterday rendered an opinion in which he held that it would not be a violation of the statutes of the state of Arkansas for a liquor dealer in this state to write to various prospective customers in dry territory in Arkansas personal, individual typewritten letters, soliciting orders for liquor. The law in this respect, the attorney general holds, makes it unlawful for liquor dealers to solicit orders for the sale of liquor through agents, circulars, posters or newspaper advertisements. The opinion was rendered at the request of C. M. Erwin of Newport.

Gov. Faubus said today that “everyone is willing for Arkansas to have an exhibit at the New York World’s Fair until you ask them to contribute some money to it.” The governor said today that it is the financing of it that is causing hesitation about approving the $500,000 it will cost for the exhibit. Winthrop Rockefeller, chairman of the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission, who is the driving force behind the exhibit, criticized the governor Saturday for saying there was a lack of interest in the exhibit. Rockefeller has offered to put up $1 for every $2 contributed for the exhibit.

A $15,000 settlement to a lawsuit by almost 50 state prisoners chained to trees last year by Pulaski County Sheriff Carroll Gravett was approved Thursday by U.S. District Judge George Howard Jr. The settlement also called for $7,500 in legal fees to be paid. The settlement specified that $15,000 would be split among the inmates and each would receive $300, a court spokesman said.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 30, 2003 HOT SPRINGS - Hot Springs drew national attention in August and September with the Buddy card, the Hot Springs Advertising and Promotion Commission said Monday. And officials expect more national attention in December, when the Summit Arena opens with a concert by singer Tony Bennett. The card, which features a photograph of former President Clinton with his dog, Buddy, was the seventh in a series of cards produced by the commission to tout Clinton’s boyhood connection to Hot Springs. Paul Johnson of Paul Johnson Associates, which handles public relations for the commission, called the latest card “phenomenally successful.”
