The nation in brief

PITTSBURGH - A family feud came to a violent end when a man shot dead the two home invaders killed his wife and son, not knowing the assailants included his long-estranged daughter, authorities said Sunday.

Though the investigation of the Friday shootings continues, authorities said it appears Josephine and Jeffrey Ruckinger planned to murder her family at their rural central Pennsylvania home - but it remains unclear what exactly led to the deadly confrontation.

Investigators said the father found his wife and son fatally shot, then shot the two intruders. The father, identified by a relative as John Frew, was not injured.

The relative, Virginia Cruse, said the victims included her 64-year-old sister Roberta Frew and the couple’s 47-year-old son.

Police say Roberta Frew, 64, answered the door and her daughter shot her at point-blank range. Jeffrey Ruckinger shot John Jr.

multiple times in the chest, killing him, police said.

Police also found a can of gas and lighter fluid in the Ruckingers’ car.

Christie weight loss grabs U.S. attention

After New Jersey Gov.

Chris Christie secretly checked into a hospital for gastric-banding surgery this year, the issue of his weight reverberated in the national media three months later with a force befitting a potential presidential candidate.

“He looks very good,” said Dr. Jaime Ponce, president of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, who believes Christie has lost 60 to 70 pounds.

What it means for the gastric-banding procedure Christie underwent is a popularity it has never seen before, surgeons have said.

Ponce, who has performed more than 3,000 weightloss surgeries, said no other public figure has drawn as much attention to the issue as Christie.

Former White House physician and self-professed Christie fan Connie Mariano said Christie’s weight was “almost like a time bomb waiting to happen” on CNN in February. Christie called her remarks irresponsible. Ten days later, he had the surgery.

House OKs increase in embassy security

WASHINGTON - The U.S. House passed a bill that would authorize additional Marines to protect American embassies, more expensive contracts for guarding overseas posts and funding for State Department operations in fiscal 2014.

The $15.6 billion bill would match the White House request for $2.65 billion in funds to improve embassy security.

“We need the Marines at the gate, we need to guard the gate, it needs to be reinforced,” said House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce, R-Calif.

The House passed the measure 384-37.

The legislation builds on previous measures that provided for increased security in the wake of the Sept.

11, 2012, attack on the U.S.

consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.
