SOCCER Freshman Mills leads Ozarks

Freshman forward Thomas Mills scored three goals Saturday in the University of the Ozarks’ 6-2 victory over Howard Payne University in American Southwest Conference action.

Mills scored all three goals in the first half to give Ozarks (6-2-2, 1-0-1 ASC) a 5-0 halftime lead over the Yellow Jackets (1-9-0, 0-2-0).

In the women’s game, Howard Payne (2-7-0, 1-1-0) scored twice in the first half and three times in the second half to take a 5-0 victory over Ozarks (5-6-0, 0-2-0).

No. 21 Fort Hays downs Harding

Fort Hays State, ranked 21st in NCAA Division II, defeated Harding 3-0 on Saturday at the Stevens Soccer Complex in Searcy.

Fort Hays (6-1-1, 2-0-1 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association) took a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute when Jaccob Rangel scored his second goal of the season with a shot inside the far post.

The score remained 1-0 until two late goals by Fort Hays, both on free kicks. Daniel Peralta scored off the hands of Harding goalkeeper Seth Peterson on a straightaway free kick from 25 yards out in the 85th minute. Less than three minutes later, Diego Cabral scored his fourth of the season on a free kick that deflected off the inside of the right post.

Fort Hays had 22 shots on goal to 12 for Harding (2-2-2, 1-1-0).

VOLLEYBALL Cotton Blossoms win twice

Arkansas-Monticello recorded victories in both of its matches Saturday at the Lyon College Tri-Match in Batesville.

The Blossoms (7-9) started the day with a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-11, 25-18) over Central Baptist and followed with a 3-2 victory (25-22, 17-25, 14-25, 25-17, 15-12) over host Lyon later in the day.

UCA downs New Orleans

Central Arkansas picked up its fifth consecutive three-set victory Saturday with a 25-13, 25-16, 25-11 decision at New Orleans.

Heather Schnars led UCA (12-3, 4-0 Southland) with a match-high 11 kills and added 5 digs, 2 service aces and 1 assist. Teammate Marissa Collins had 32 assists against the Privateers (2-14, 0-4).

JBU rallies in Texas

John Brown rallied to win three consecutive games Saturday and raced past host Southwestern A.G. (Texas) 19-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-22 in Waxahachie, Texas.

Sophomore Audrey Dearien’s paced the Golden Eagles (8-13, 2-2 Sooner Athletic) with a .417 attack percentage and added 14 digs.

Jessica Sodich finished with a match-high 20 kills for Southwestern (10-7, 3-2), while teammate Kassy Cox contributed 18.

TENNIS Tech wraps up Suns Slam

Bohdana Sardak won a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 3 singles, while Olga Leyshyna took an 8-1 decision in No. 1 singles and Nozomi Matsuoka took an 8-3 decision at No. 2 singles as the Arkansas Tech women’s tennis team finished the sixth annual Golden Suns Slam on Saturday in Russellville.

The Golden Suns went undefeated in singles play and won 6 of 10 doubles matches.

CROSS COUNTRY JBU teams finish second

Both John Brown University teams finished second to Arkansas-Fort Smith in a meet Saturday at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville.

Senior Tekste Gebreslasse, fourth place, and junior Marcos Gutierrez, fifth place, paced the Golden Eagles men’s team. Gebreslasse bettered his previous time by seven seconds, with a 27:50 in the 8K race. Gutierrez was just three seconds behind.

UAFS won the team title with a score of 28.

Junior Kari Miller led the Lady Golden Eagles with a fourth-place finish in a time of 19:59. Senior Valerie Kliewer finished sixth (20:07).

UAFS captured four of the top five places, earning the title and finishing the meet with 28 points behind Kelsea Greshwentner’s winning time of 18:52.
