Concert benefits court advocates

On Wednesday, four music groups from Bella Vista will perform a benefit concert for Court Appointed Special Advocates of Northwest Arkansas at Riordan Hall, 3 Riordan Drive in Bella Vista. Local talent will include Sophisticated Ladies of Bella Vista dance group, Perfect Harmony women’s barbershop chorus, Hoot ‘n’ Holler Cloggers and Rockin’ Roads classic rock band.

Refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m., with the program beginning at 7 p.m. There is no admission charge, but donations will be taken.

The event is presented by Bella Vista Village Property Owner’s Association and Modern Woodmen of America.

Candlelight vigil marks awareness

In recognition of Mental Illness Awareness Week, Oct. 6-12, Mental Health America in Northwest Arkansas and the Springdale Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will hold a candlelight vigil from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 6 in the chapel at First United Methodist Church, 206 W. Johnson Ave. in Springdale. This year’s theme is “You are not Alone in this Fight.” This is afree community event open to all.

Home buyers get information Credit Counseling of Arkansas’ next Home Buyer Education class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Washington County Extension service building at 2536 N. McConnell Ave. in Fayetteville.

This class includes professionals from the real estate, insurance and lending industries who will provide information and answer questions about the home buying process.

The course is free and is a pre-requisite for any home buyer participants using down payment assistance with Arkansas Development Finance Authority.

Reception honors exhibiting artists The Illinois River Watershed Partnership and the Heart of America Artists Association are presenting the 2013 Illinois River Salon Art Exhibition. The inaugural juried exhibition features artwork celebrating the scenic beauty of the Illinois River Watershed of northwestern Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. Artists are competing for more than $7,500 in awards.

Award-winning works will be displayed Thursday and Friday during the Illinois River Watershed Partnership’s 2013 national “Restoration of Our Rivers” Conference at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville.

The public is invited to meet the artists at an awards ceremony and reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Compton Gardens in Bentonville. Works will be for sale.

Information: irwp.org Workshop preps youth for exam The Bentonville Public Library will be conducting an ACT Prep Workshop for students preparing for the national exam. The workshop is modeled after the University of Arkansas College Access Initiative ACT Prep program.

Students will participate in a classroom workshop where they will learn about motivating testing strategies, overcoming testing anxieties and the overall content of the ACT. Students will use retired ACT exams for this workshop to better understand the curriculum of the test.

The workshop is scheduled at 4:15 p.m.

Monday through Friday at Bentonville Public Library. This program is for teenagers 13 to 18 years old.
