MARINERS Wedge: Won’t be back

SEATTLE - Seattle Manager Eric Wedge has told the Mariners he will not return for next season.

The Mariners said Friday that Wedge will manage the final three games of the season against Oakland.

“I accept Eric’s decision not to return and thank him for his hard work here the past three years. I want to wish him and his family all the best in the future,” General Manager Jack Zduriencik said in a statement.

Wedge was brought in to replace Don Wakamatsu - who was fired during the 2010 season - because of the track record he built in Cleveland taking the Indians through a rebuilding process and nearly leading them to the World Series. But the rebuilding never seemed to end in Seattle with a constant influx of young prospects from the minors being called up and some veterans failing to meet expectations.

AMERICAN LEAGUE Tiebreaker schedule set

NEW YORK - Tampa Bay decided it would rather have two chances to earn an AL wild-card berth rather than a home game in the event of a three-way tie.

Cleveland would host the Rays in a tiebreaker game Monday if there is a three-way deadlock for the two AL berths, and the loser would play at Texas on Tuesday for the second spot in the postseason, Major League Baseball said Friday.

RANGERS Angels game moved up

ARLINGTON, Texas - The playoff-chasing Texas Rangers are now trying to beat the rain.

The starting time of today’s home game against the Los Angeles Angels has been moved up to 11:05 a.m. Central, which would be the earliest start ever at Rangers Ballpark. The game had been scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

The forecast calls for moderate showers and thunderstorms in the area by early this afternoon, increasing in intensity throughout the day.

MARLINS President fired

MIAMI - Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest has been fired by owner Jeffrey Loria after 12 years with the franchise.

The move came Friday as the Marlins neared the end of their third consecutive last-place season in the NL East.
