Cougars ride Brewer’s arm, legs

HELENA-WEST HELENA - Curly Brewer threw three touchdown passes and rushed for a score to lead Helena-West Helena Central to a 38-18 5A-West victory over Jacksonville at Cad Polk Stadium.

The Cougars (2-2, 1-0) led 19-6 at halftime, scoring the final 19 points after falling behind 6-0 early.

Brewer threw one touchdown pass in the first half, but he went to work after Jacksonville cut Helena-West Helena’s lead to 19-12, throwing touchdown passes of 49 and 67 yards to Anthony Lewis to give the Cougars a 31-12 lead with 4:40 to play in the game.

Brewer completed the scoring for Helena West-Helena with a 27-yard touchdown run after an interception by Tiontae Williams. Patel’s extra point made it 38-12 with 1:57 to go.

Lewis, who caught two long touchdown passes, set up the Cougars’ go-ahead touchdown with a 68-yard punt return in the second quarter. Keith Hays scored on a 4-yard run with 2:36 to play in the half to make it 13-6.

The Cougars led 19-6 at halftime when they forced a punt and drove 61 yards in six plays, with Brewer throwing a 5-yard scoring pass to Hays with 27.1 seconds to play in the half.

The Red Devils (1-3, 0-1) took the game’s opening possession 61 yard on 11 plays and ate up 3:59. Reginald Barnes scored on a 1-yard run, but the extra-point attempt was no good, leaving the Red Devils with a 6-0 lead with 8:01 remaining in the first quarter.

Helena-West Helena responded with a 10-play drive that stalled at the Jacksonville 10. Sagar Patel kicked a 27-yard field goal to cut the lead to 6-3.

Patel tied the game at 6-6 on a 32-yard field goal with 6:08 to play in the half when the Cougars blocked a Jacksonville field-goal attempt and moved to the Red Devils’ 15 in 15 plays.

The first three possessions of the second half ended with turnovers, and the Red Devils took advantage of the Cougars’ second turnover to score on a 21-yard run by Lamont Gause with 10:28 to go in the third quarter to make it 19-12.

Jacksonville scored on a 41-yard run Robert Knowlin with 6.9 seconds left. The try for two failed, making the final 38-18.
