Allen OK’d to return, but status still unclear

FAYETTEVILLE - Is Arkansas Coach Bret Bielema messing with Texas A&M? Or is quarterback Brandon Allen going to play against the Aggies tonight?

“Excited for a LIVE crowd in Razorback Stadium to start SEC play,” Bielema tweeted Friday night. “We have a number of players back including QB @BrandonAllen_10 #WPS #1-0.”

Arkansas football’s Twitter account posted that Allen “practiced this week with no setbacks and was cleared to return this weekend” earlier Friday.

Allen, who started Arkansas’ first three games, missed last week’s game at Rutgers because of a shoulder injury and Bielema said Thursday that Allen hadn’t thrown in practice this week except for short passes with trainer Matt Summers using a lightweight ball.

But Bielema didn’t rule out Allen playing tonight if he was medically cleared and demonstrated to the coaches that he could execute the game plan.

Quarterback AJ Derby, who started at Rutgers, had taken first-team snaps since Allen’s injury, and Bielema said Derby will start again tonight if Allen can’t play.
