Yankees’ exit signs easy to see

The New York Yankees are heading into what could be a dicey offseason, according to Anthony Rieber of Newsday.

“All that’s left for the Yankees is to say goodbye to Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte before heading off into an uncertain offseason,” Rieber wrote. “Will they also be saying goodbye to Joe Girardi, Robinson Cano, Curtis Granderson, Hiroki Kuroda, Boone Logan, Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain? All will be free agents.

“Here’s a couple of hints: Chamberlain had three large packing boxes in front of his locker on Wednesday.

“Hughes gave up 7 hits and 3 runs in 2 innings and fell to 4-14 with a 5.19 ERA.

“Cano said he doesn’t knowwhat’s going to happen. So did Granderson.

“If reporters got around to Kuroda, he probably would have said the same thing through a translator.

“Will the Yankees also be saying a temporary goodbye to Alex Rodriguez, whose appeal of his 211-game suspension begins Monday?

“And what of Derek Jeter? He appeared on the field Wednesday night only to join Rivera in presenting Pettitte with a goingaway gift of a signed base from Pettitte’s final home start.

“That’s what 2013 has come to for the Yankees: gifts and goodbyes. And the search for silver linings.”

Kicking around idea

The Book of Manning, a documentary about Archie Manning, wife Olivia and sons Cooper, Peyton and Eli, debuted on ESPN on Tuesday night, but Paul Klee of The Gazette in Colorado Springs, Colo., has an idea for another documentary.

“Here, ESPN, is another idea,” Klee wrote. “The Book of Colquitt.

‘They wouldn’t make it a national documentary,’ Broncos punter Britton Colquitt said with a laugh when I pitched the idea Wednesday. ‘They might give us our own copy. That’s it.’

“As the sports world grabbed a front-row seat for the home movies of Peyton and Eli playing catch in the back yard, anotherfamily with football ties jumped to mind.

“Britton is the younger brother. He punts for the Broncos.

“Dustin is the older brother.

He punts for the Chiefs.

“Dad is Craig. He won two Super Bowls punting for the Steelers.

“This isn’t football’s first family. But it might be football’s smartest family.

” ‘My son is 1½ . He’s kicking already,’ Britton said of Nash, who recently visited dad’s office at Dove Valley. ‘I’ll hold the ball out and he’ll kick it. He’s figured it out.’

“Keep kickin’, kid. These are special, rare genes you’re working with.”He said it
