JONESBORO - Speeders and joyriders must put on the brakes when driving their autos on the streets of Jonesboro. Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Gordon Frierson and the city police have opened a crusade against fast motoring on the city thoroughfares, and the recent fatal accident has emphasized it. E.K. Nutt was the first victim and he was fined $5.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 26, 1963

Acting Police Chief R.E. Brians said yesterday that some persons were using an illegal gimmick to get around Arkansas’ ticket scalping law.Arkansas Razorback football games at Little Rock have been sold out for some time and tickets are at a premium. Saturday night’s game with Missouri was sold out a month ago. Some persons are putting a pencil or some other small item with the ticket and selling it for a price much higher than the $5 value listed on the ticket. “The prosecuting attorney (John Jernigan) says this is subterfuge and a violation of Arkansas law,” Brians said.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 26, 1988

When Little Rock city officials showcase $2.5 million of renovations to City Hall and old Central Fire Station on Wednesday, city residents also will find out what’s in a small time capsule discovered there in June. The public is invited to the open house, which will include the non-voting agenda session of the city Board of Directors, said Nancy Baker, the city’s public relations director. Renovations at City Hall have included a new heating and air conditioning system and the restructuring of the interior to better accommodate city offices. Also, the old fire station was converted into 17,000 square feet of office space.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 26, 2003

A $12.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will transform Arkansas’ emergency management center from the oldest in the United States to the newest and make it the most advanced facility of its kind in the nation. Arkansan Asa Hutchinson, the department’s undersecretary for border and transportation security, made the announcement Thursday at a state Capitol news conference. The grant was the largest among $74 million in grants to 19 states and territories for improvements to emergency management centers, which Hutchinson said was a “significant tribute to the work of the state of Arkansas and the emergency management team here in the state.”
