LINCOLN

Wolves Rolling On Offense

Lincoln scored 71 points last Friday, which is 15 points less than the Wolves scored all year in 2007 when they went 0-10.

Quarterback Drew Harris threw five touchdown passes in the first half as Lincoln built a 50-0 lead and eventually won 71-0 over winless Dover. Lincoln (3-0) played with reserves in the second half against the Pirates, who set up one Lincoln touchdown when its punter kicked the ball into the back of a blocker.

Harris finished with 13 of 18 completions for 320 yards, all in the first half.

“They were packing the box to try and take away the run, and that opened up our passing game,” Lincoln coach Brad Harris said. “We were still able to score 21 points in the second half while using second- and third-team kids.”

Lincoln expects a tougher challenge in its 4A-1 Conference opener against Berryville on Friday. The Bobcats (2-1) have already won more games than last season, when they finished 1-8. Lee Atkins is the first-year coach at Berryville, which won 21-20 last week over Green Forrest.

“They’ve got a new coach and it seems like they’re excited about football,” Harris said. “Their quarterback, Austin Carr, is one of the better athletes in the conference.”

Carr is a senior and a basketball player who did not participate in football last season. The Bobcats are balanced in the backfield with senior Ethan Chapin, who compiled 131 yards rushing and receiving last week, and sophomore Emilio Duarte, who had 115 yards rushing against Green Forrest.

GENTRY

Pioneers Off To Strong Start

Gentry’s Jarod Cousins enjoyed a huge night to help the Pioneers (2-1) help lead Heber Springs to a 27-19 win on Friday.

Cousins accounted for 220 yards of total offense and two touchdowns and also added 15 tackles and an interception on defense for the Pioneers. He also punted six times for a 35.7-yard average, but he had three punts inside the 20 and two inside the 10.

“He had an exceptional game,” Gentry coach Brian Little said. “He’s playing very well for us on both sides of the ball.”

The senior rushed for 99 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown. He also completed 10 of 17 passes for 121 yards and another score against Heber Springs.

Cousins has rushed for 339 yards and thrown for 508 yards for the season. He has also ran for two touchdowns and thrown for four.

Little has also been pleased with his team’s defensive effort over the first three weeks.

“We shut out West Fork and gave up only a field goal in the second half against Charleston and 19 this past week,” Little said. “We’ve got eight interceptions in three games. I’m very pleased with the way we are playing.”

The Pioneers, who led 21-0 at halftime against Heber Springs, also got a defensive score when defensive end Dusty Haag recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown in the second half.

Brothers Jake and Stone Faulkenberry have also combined for 23 receptions for 395 yards between the two. They also have 31 tackles and three interceptions between them in the secondary.

Gentry opens 4A-1 Conference play at Farmington on Friday night.

SHILOH CHRISTIAN

Saints Eye 5A-West Opener

SPRINGDALE — The final score might not reflect how well Shiloh Christian played against Class 6A juggernaut Greenwood last week.

Although the Saints suffered a 55-24 setback, there were a few plays here and there that might have made it a more interesting game.

Greenwood jumped to a 13-0 lead, but the Saints had a chance to take a 14-13 lead when a holding penalty negated a touchdown. Shiloh Christian kicked a field goal instead and trailed 13-10. Then toward the end of the first half, the Saints drove 80 yards to pull within 34-24 at halftime.

“We had several balls dropped and had some turnovers that put us in a bigger hole,” Saints coach Josh Floyd. “We know what that’s like to look up and be down 21 points very quickly.”

Shiloh Christian (1-1-1) will open 5-West Conference play at home Friday against Morrilton, a team many have targeted as the conference favorite. The game will have a 7 p.m. kickoff in Champions Stadium.

“They are very athletic and have a great quarterback,” Floyd said of Morrilton. “Toney Hawkins is probably the best quarterback in the conference and one of the best in the state.”

Following Friday’s home game, the Saints are on the road for the next two weeks.
