PUBLIC VIEWPOINT Increase A Good Thing

Congratulations, Bentonville. You did a very fi ne thing in passing the resolution to build a new high school.

Most parents don’t realize what educators know very well. Learning suft ers when classrooms are overcrowded, even by two or three students. All students, even the most confi dent, feel the stress brought on by a few extra bodies in the classroom. Believe me, the teacher feels it, too. (I was a teacher for 30 years.)

That stress and tension is felt much worse by those students who are shy or not so sure of themselves. The majority of the students are in this group. Remember, these are your children.

This stress is carried into the hallways, cafeteria and even into the off ces. It is like a black cloud enveloping every inch of the school grounds. Would you like to find yourself in this atmosphere eight hours a day, five days a week? This situation creates a variety of health problems.

Why am I writing this now instead of a couple of weeks ago? For one thing, this issue was political and I don’t get involved in political issues. But I do care dearly about our youth; they are our future. I also want to give reassurance to those who voted against the measure. Good for you; you voted for what you believed. Here is hoping that reading the above makes you feel a little bit better.

RogersAN AFFRONT ON HOLY DAY On Yom Kippur (Sept.

13), the most holy day for the Jews, what a shock to see the Religion section of your paper has almost a full page devoted to a detailed description of the Muslim religion. And not a single mention of Yom Kippur.

What is meant by this blatant aft ront?
