Interstate, Huntsville Road Lane Closures Planned

FAYETTEVILLE — Some overnight lane closures are expected this week on Interstate 540 to allow construction crews to install barrier walls between the Wedington Drive and Porter Road exits.

Also beginning today, the eastbound lane of Huntsville Road is scheduled to close for three weeks while the city’s Transportation Division builds a new sidewalk on the south side of Huntsville from Curtis Avenue to Happy Hollow Road.

The outside, northbound lane of I-540 will be closed sporadically from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. between Wedington and Porter, according to an Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department news release.

The wall is part of the process of adding a third lane in each direction of I-540. The barrier wall is expected to take up to three nights to erect.

Highway officials advised motorists to be careful traveling through the work zone. Increased traffic enforcement is scheduled.

The Arkansas Highway Commission awarded a $16.6 million contract to Pace Construction of St. Louis in July for the project.

Up-to-date information on lane closures is available at www.arkansashighways.com.

Sidewalk construction on Huntsville Road is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays through Oct. 11. Drivers traveling east will be rerouted along Curtis Avenue and Fairlane Street. The 0.3-mile section of Huntsville Road will be open nights and weekends.

The new sidewalk eventually will run nearly a mile from Happy Hollow Road to Morningside Drive, according to a city news release.
