American Legion serves up dinner

American Legion Post 341, 1889 Bella Vista Way in Bella Vista, will hold a steak dinner and dance Saturday. The band will be Shades of Blue.

Tickets for the steak dinner are $12 per person or $17 for the dinner and dance.

Tickets will be sold at the American Legion building from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday before the Saturday night dance or are available from a American Legion member. Tickets are limited.

Health Fair Thursday

Schmieding Center will hold its 24th annual Senior Health Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Thursday at Riordan Hall, 3 Riordan Drive in Bella Vista.

The event, “Potpourri of Health Information,” will feature 70 vendors with informational booths. Those who attend will have the opportunity to take advantage of health screenings, flu shots, lectures and can register for door prizes.

The event is sponsored by the Bella Vista Resource Advisory Council.

NWACC hosts ‘Shades of Ireland’

The NorthWest Arkansas Community College Foundation will present a second informational session on an April trip to Ireland at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 30 in the third floor Board of Trustees room in Burns Hall on the Bentonville campus.

Highlights of the 10-day trip, organized by Collette Vacations, will include Dublin, the Cliffs of Moher, Blarney Castle, Waterford Crystal, Killarney, and the Ring of Kerry.

Cost of the trip will be a special rate of $3,049 per person for double occupancy.

That price includes round-trip airfare from Tulsa International Airport, transportation to and from the airport and hotel stays.

Thanks to the partnership with Collette Vacations, a portion of the travel fare will support the NWACC Foundation.

Fly fishing on schedule

A Fly Fishing 101 workshop is set for noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 29 Hobbs State Park - Conservation Area near Rogers.

Two hours of instruction will be in the classroom, and two hours will be outside.

Participants will learn four basic casts, the six basic types of flies, how to cast and “play” the flies in the water, how to read water, how to wade, how to purchase and assemble your equipment, how to store your equipment, as well as how to tie the four basic knots used by fly fishers. All equipment will be provided.

The workshop will be taught by Sallyann Brown, past recipient of the Woman of the Year and the Federation of Fly Fishers Educator of the Year awards from the Federation of Fly Fishers.

Minimum age is 12 years. Cost is $35 per person. Class size is limited to 15.

Berns To Speak To Quilters

Internationally known quilter Wendy Butler Berns will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Quilters United in Learning Together at St.

Thomas Episcopal Church in Springdale.

Berns’ quilts are know for their use of color, unusual fabrics and unconventional techniques. She also will teach a workshop on Friday. “Out on a Limb” involves textural picture image applique.
