FISHING Goines leads Central Open

Mark Goines of Shady Point, Okla., leads after the first round of the Bass Pro Shops Central Open on the Arkansas River in Muskogee, Okla.

Goines leads after two days with a total weight of 26 pounds, 12 ounces. Brock Mosley of Collinsville, Miss., is in second place after pulling 16 pounds, 7 ounces and trails by one ounce, with 26-11. Rounding out the top five are Chris Jones of Bokoshe, Okla., at 26-7; Trevor Romans of Plano, Texas at 24-14; and Terry Butcher of Talala, Okla. at 24-5.

Stetson Blaylock of Benton is in 10th place with 23-10 after pulling in 11-5 Friday.

John Thomas of Hulbert, Okla., leads the co-anger division at 17-9.

GOLF Arkansas women in second place

Arkansas sophomore Regina Plasencia and senior Emily Tubert both finished with two-under 69s, leading the Razorbacks to a first-round 282 and second place at the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn., on Friday.

The duo are tied for third overall helping Arkansas into second place, just three strokes behind day-one leader South Carolina, which is in the clubhouse with 279.

Tubert turned one-under with a pair of birdies on four and seven. She had three bogeys in the round but three birdies on the back nine on holes 11, 15 and 16 kept the three-time All-American under par for the day.

Plasencia, who was Arkansas’ top finisher a week ago, was two-under on the front nine with birdies on the first, fifth and eighth holes and a bogey on the fourth hole. She played the back nine even. It is her third below-par round in the four-round season.

Freshman Summar Roachell and sophomore Gabriela Lopez both finished with a 72. Senior Emma Lavy finished with a 78.

VOLLEYBALL Arkansas falls to Kansas State

Arkansas lost 23-25, 18-25, 17-25 to Kansas State on Friday night at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville.

The Razorbacks were led by freshman Breana James with 10 kills, 2 blocks and 1 dig. Summer Morgan and Meredish Hays each had eight kills while Emily Helm and Raymariely Sanots had nine digs.

Arkansas (6-4) hosts Saint Louis at 7 p.m. today in the finale of the Razorback Invitational.

Arkansas State falls to UAB

Arkansas State lost to Alabama-Birmingham 25-14, 25-20, 25-18 in the opening game of the Belmont Bruin Classic in Nashville, Tenn.

The Red Wolves were led in kills by Sarah Kemp, who had 10, while Sadie Clark and Kelsey Sullivan added five kills each. Gerig had 22 assists. Defensively, the Red Wolves were led by Megan Baska’s 12 digs and Kelsey Sullivan’s four blocks, including one block solo.

Arkansas State (4-8) plays Belmont today at 12:30 p.m. and Mississippi State at 3:30 p.m. UAB improved to 11-3.

UALR tops Austin Peay, Memphis

UALR defeated Austin Peay 19-25, 25-18, 25-15, 25-17 and Memphis 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 to win its second consecutive tournament title in Memphis.

Edina Begic led UALR with 33 kills and 23 digs. Sonja Milanovic added 22 kills. Marleen de Zoete had 70 assists in both matches.

UALR finishes the tournament when it plays LaSalle today.

SOCCER Arkansas State shuts out UAPB

Arkansas State junior midfielder Christina Fink scored two goals and had an assist in the Red Wolves’ 5-0 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Friday at the A-State Soccer Complex in Jonesboro.

Fink’s goals came in the 38th and 57th minute. Jenna Durest, Madison Joyce and Loren Mitchell also scored for the Red Wolves.
