Johnson, Robinson roll in rout

Brennen Johnson ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as Pulaski Robinson trounced North Pulaski 50-6 in a nonconference game on a soggy Friday night at Charlie George Stadium.

Johnson, a 5-11 sophomore, completed 14 of 20 passes for 190 yards - all in the first half - as the Senators (3-0) raced to a 43-6 halftime advantage.

“He’s the best [sophomore quarterback] we’ve had since I’ve been here,” said Robinson Coach Todd Eskola, whose team rolled up 444 yards of total offense. “His leadership skills are outstanding. His poise on the field is not that of a sophomore. He doesn’t get rattled. He doesn’t have highs and lows. He’s the ultimate team player and the kids have really rallied behind him and we’re piling up big numbers right now.”

Johnson’s scoring runscame from 1 and 25 yards out while his touchdown pass was a 40-yard connection to junior Cameron Harris.

Robinson scored on six of its eight first-half drives and held a 15-0 lead over the Falcons (0-3) before North Pulaski ran its first offensive play.

Robinson junior Blake Burks outraced four North Pulaski players to the ball on the ensuing kickoff to make a recovery at the Falcons’ 35. After a false start penalty placed the ball back on the 40, Johnson found Harris over the middlefor a touchdown. Adam Toler added the first of his six extra-point kicks for a 15-0 Robinson lead.

Johnson connected with five receivers to account for his 190 yards. Senior Kody Williams caught five passesfor a game-high 96 yards while Harris was also on the receiving end of five of Johnson’s passes for 66 yards.

North Pulaski was limited to 35 yards of total offense, including a minus-1 yard in the second half and 7 yards through the air, but the Falcons did manage to score.

After being shutout by a combined 62-0 in their first two games, the Falcons got their first points of the season when Fred Thomas scored from 3 yards out with 1:16 left in the first half. North Pulaski’s touchdown was set up by Jesse Baltimore’s 94-yard kickoff return.

Sophomore Xavier Casey helped account for Robinson’s final two touchdowns. Taking the ball on a double handoff, Casey hit junior Stormi Chaney in stride for a 69-yard scoring pass with 54 seconds left in the second quarter.
