Moore celebrates 100th birthday

Jesse Fern Moore of Bentonville will celebrate her 100th birthday Oct. 1with a gathering from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Golden Corral in Rogers.

Moore was born Oct. 1, 1913, in Salina, Okla., to Fred and Mary Spohn. She married the late Rev.

Curtis Moore onJuly 17, 1937, in Drumright, Okla.

He was a brick and stone mason who pastored several churches in Missouri and California. The couple were married for 58 years.

She currently lives in Bentonville with their only child, Ruth Moore.

Vennerbeck earns Eagle Scout rank

Clarke Vennerbeck of Rogers became an Eagle Scout onSept. 8. He is a member of Troop 122, which meets at First United Methodist Church in Rogers.

For his Eagle Scout project, Vennerbeck, along with other scouts and scout leaders, replaced rusted and bent fire rings at designated camp sites along the Pigeon Roost Trail at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area near Rogers. The group hauled in new rings, dug up and removed old rings, leveled the sites, set the new rings in concrete and cleared the sites of debris.

The project included 271 volunteer hours.

Fishback reunion

scheduled Oct. 12

The 14th annual Fishback School reunion will be 1-4 p.m.

Oct. 12 at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale.

Fishback School, District 68, was established in 1885. The district served elementary school students until it was annexed by the Springdale School District on June 6, 1949.

The two-room frame building that housed the school still stands on Butterfield Coach Road on the eastern edge of Springdale and is listed on the Register of Historic Places. It’s been used for church services, bible school, extension club meetings and community events since the school closed.

Residents who attended the school are invited to bring photos, scrapbooks, memories and funny stories to share. Desserts, coffee, tea and lemonade will be served.

Carson wins competition

Ella Carson, a student at Washington Junior High School in Bentonville, is the 2013 recipient of the Economics Arkansas Calendar Program Award.

Students in kindergarten through the eighth grade were invited to illustrate an economic concept to beincluded in a 2013-14 calendar.

Drawings were judged on accuracy and creativity.

The calendar will be distributed to teachers throughout Arkansas, and Carson will receive a $50 Walmart gift card and a copy of the calendar.

Highfill pageant open to youth

Contestants are needed for the Miss Highfill, Junior Miss Highfill, Little Mr. and Miss Highfill and Mr. and Miss Highfill Tiny Tot pageants.

Ages range from 2 or 3 years old for the Tiny Tots pageant to 16 to 18 years old for the Miss Highfill contest.

The pageants are scheduled to take place Oct. 5 during Highfill Hay Daze.

Contestants must be Benton County residents.

Lobby named

for former dean

The new lobby at Vol Walker Hall on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville bears the name of former Fay Jones School of Architecture dean C. Murray Smart Jr.

thanks to a $250,000 gift from Smart’s son, Clifton J.

Smart III, and daughter-in law, M. Gail Smart.

The lobby was dedicated on Aug. 8 to celebrate the professor emeritus’s 80th birthday. Murray and Clifton Smart each received a resolution from UA Chancellor G. David Gearhart expressing the university’s appreciation.

The elder Smart joined the UA faculty in 1966. He served as dean of the architecture school for 15 years - the longest tenure by an architecture dean at the UA.

He received the Arkansas Alumni Association’s Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award for Teaching and Research in 1995. Smart retired in 1998but continued to teach as a professor emeritus.

The C. Murray Smart Multi-Media Resource Center, the C. Murray Smart Medal and the C. Murray Smart Rome Program Award at the school are also named in his honor.

Springdale student wins scholarship

Ashley Wiedenhoeft of Springdale has received the Jewel Minnis Scholarship to study at the University of Arkansas.

Wiedenhoeft is a recent graduate of Har-Ber High School in Springdale. She plans to major in communication disorders at the UA.

The Jewel Minnis Scholarship was established to support high-ability students enrolled at the UA.

Springdale student earns choral grant

Grant Atkins, a Springdale High School graduate, is one of six incoming students at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro to receive a choral music grant.

Atkins plans to major in biology. He is theson of Ladonna Elliott and Glenn Atkins.

Each choral music grant recipient will participate in the university’s Concert Choir and at least one vocal music ensemble. The grants come with a $1,600 award and are renewable for up to three additional years.

Carvell named board president

Rich Carvell Jr. of Bentonville has been named incoming president of the Arkansas State University Alumni Association.

The group elected new board members Aug. 31 at its annual meeting at Cooper Alumni Center in Jonesboro.

Carvell earned a bachelor’s degree in business at the university in 1991. The volunteer board meets three times a year.
