Big Shots score for Fayetteville youth

Three big shots who made big shots hope to score a slam dunk for the Yvonne Richardson Community Center on Oct. 1.

The second annual Celebrating Our Kids banquet, “An Evening With the Three Big Shots,” will feature former Razorbacks basketball standouts Charles Balentine, U.S. Reed and Scotty Thurman.

All three landed buzzer beaters to take the Razorbacks to victory in big games - U.S. Reed in 1981, from half-court, in the NCAA Tournament to defeat the Louisville Cardinals; Charles Balentine in 1984 against No. 1 ranked North Carolina (with Michael Jordan); and Scotty Thurman with a 3-pointer in the 1994 National Championship game to defeat Duke.

Former Razorback coach Nolan Richardson will be a featured speaker. The community center is named in memory of his daughter.

The center opened in 1996 and offers school children summer and after-school plus adult activities at no charge.

Children’s programs include summer day camp, Kids’ Nite on Tuesdays and Thursdays, youth gardening, Fall Fundango field trips, Fayetteville Youth Wrestling Club and X-Factor home school physical education.

Among the center’s offerings for adults are a co-ed volleyball league, March Madness Bracket Challenge and twice weekly pickleball.

Proceeds from the fundraiser, which will also feature dinner and a silent auction, will go toward replacing the center’s gymnasium floor.
