BENTONVILLE — One of two men arrested in connection with the killing of a Springdale man is in the Benton County Jail.

James Michael Smith, 48, of Springdale was booked into jail at 1:24 p.m. Thursday, according to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office’s website. Sheriff’s Office deputies traveled to Norfolk, Va., to bring him back to Arkansas.

Smith will have a bond hearing today, said Van Stone, prosecutor.

Smith, and John Guerra, 55, of Duson, La., were arrested Aug. 23 in Virginia in connection with capital murder, aggravated robbery and aggravated residential burglary.

Edward Abel, 62, was stabbed to death, according to court documents. Abel was taken to Northwest Medical Center-Springdale where he was pronounced dead. Abel lived in the portion of Springdale in Benton County.

Smith waived extradition, but couldn't be returned to Arkansas because Florida had placed a hold on him. Florida later dropped the hold.

Guerra has refused to waive extradition. Benton County prosecutors must obtain a governor’s warrant so Guerra can be brought to Arkansas to face charges.

Abel was found unresponsive in his home following a 911 call at 11:15 p.m. Aug. 16, according to a news release from Springdale police.

Abel called a woman, but the call went to voice mail, according to police records. When the woman listened to the message she heard a dog barking and heard Abel say, “Just take my wallet.” The woman then called 911.
