Four Arkansans named as 2013 Sturgis fellows

Four Arkansas students have been selected as 2013 Sturgis Fellows by the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas, the institution announced Thursday.

Arhita Dasgupta of Little Rock, Kassidy Joyner of Rogers, Will Pohlman of Prairie Grove and Thomas Selig of Hot Springs were selected for the fellowship. Each fellow will receive $15,000 per year for four years, according to a news release.

Dasgupta is a graduate of Central High School in Little Rock where she was president of the National Honor Society. She plans to major in biochemistry and Spanish and is the daughter of Tonmoy and Shree Dasgupta.

Joyner, a graduate of Rogers Heritage High School, is a National Merit Scholarand an Advanced Placement Scholar with distinction. In high school, she served as president of the German Club and vice president of the National Honor Society.

She plans to study biology and Japanese and is the daughter of Clay and Jennifer Joyner.

Pohlman, a graduate of Prairie Grove High School, was chosen as a 2013 U.S. Presidential Scholar and as a Governor’s Distinguished Scholar. He was a state officer for 4-H and state president of the Arkansas Junior Angus Association.

He plans to major in biochemistry and animal science. He is the son of Fred and Tami Pohlman.

Selig, a graduate of Lakeside High School in Hot Springs, is a National Merit Scholar, an Advanced Placement Scholar with distinction and an Arkansas Times Academic All-Star. Heserved as a delegate to the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program, secretary of state for Arkansas Boys State, National Honor Society president and vice president of Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, a Spanish national honors society.

Selig plans to study political science, business economics and Spanish at UA. He is the son of Paul and Mary Jo Selig.

The Sturgis Fellowship is the university’s oldest fellowship and is made possible by the Roy and Christine Sturgis Charitable and Educational Trust, according to the news release. Recipients are chosen by a committee of faculty and staff members from the Fulbright College based on their academic resumes, essays, book lists, letters of recommendation, high school transcripts and interviews, the news release said.
