Ex-Secretary Rice to give UA lecture

Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will be the spring speaker for the University of Arkansas Distinguished Lecture Series, the university announced Thursday. Rice will speak at 7 p.m. March 5 at Barnhill Arena in Fayetteville, according to a news release.

The lecture is free and open to the public. No tickets are needed.

A native of Birmingham, Ala., Rice served as the 66th secretary of state from 2005-09 under former President George W. Bush. An acknowledged expert on Russia and foreign affairs, Rice was the first black woman to hold the position.

She also was assistant to the president for national security affairs from 2001-05, according to the news release. Before that, Rice was provost at Stanford University.

Rice currently is a professor of political science at Stanford University. She returned there to teach in 2009. She is also the Denning Professor in Global Business and the Economy in the Stanford Graduate School of Business, the news release said.

The UA Distinguished Lecture Series is a student-sponsored program. Speakers are chosen by a committee of students, and faculty and staff members. Events are funded by a student-approved fee, according to the news release.
