Limes have made famous friends over the years. Here are some of the most notable lime fanciers: The British Navy. British sailors ate so many limes in the 1800s they earned the nickname “Limey.” The fruit was the military’s secret weapon against scurvy, a disease caused by a vitamin C deficiency. Lemons have more vitamin C, but the crew soured on lemons. The navy floated on lime juice.
