Plane Lands In Elkins Field, No One injured

ELKINS — Two men walked away from a single-engine plane after an emergency landing in a hayfield along Center Street on Wednesday.

Tommy Lee, who owns the 2008 Remos GX Light Sport aircraft, said the pilot as Ken Braswell.

Lee said Braswell was returning from Little Rock to Springdale when he ran out of fuel about 2:15 p.m. and landed in a field, across from the Elkhorn Station, 2405 N. Center St.

“This is the equivalent of a car running off the road and bending its bumper,” Lee said. “But because it’s an airplane, people make a big deal of it.”

Chuck Rexford, an investigator with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, said his agency assisted Elkins police in the investigation.

He said detectives were waiting Wednesday to hear from the National Transportation Safety Board.

“Once they say we can release it, it’s up to the owner to get it removed,” he said.

Bill Rhodes, an officer with the Elkins Police Department, said he couldn’t release the name of the passenger until he hears from the safety board.

Melani Prinjua, who works at the Elkhorn Station, said she didn’t hear the plane crash.

“I had a customer who was sitting by a window in the lobby,” she said. “All of a sudden, he jumped up and yelled at me to call the police. I didn’t know what was happening until someone told me a plane had crashed.”

Lee said the nose of the plane was damaged during the emergency landing, but Braswell and his passenger walked away “without a scratch.”

According to the FAA registry records, the fixed-wing single engine plane is owned by Adventure Flight Aviation in Springdale.

“I’m proud of him in that he did everything right,” Lee said of Braswell’s landing. “He made a beautiful textbook landing just like he was taught.”
