Bulldogs make it 45 in row

GREENWOOD - The streaks continued Friday night at Smith-Robinson Stadium.

Greenwood used a strong effort behind senior quarterback Jabe Burgess to defeat Little Rock Hall 38-6 and extend its consecutive victories streak to 45 game while the Warriors added another loss to their 23-game skid.

Greenwood (7-0, 4-0 7A/6A-Central) jumped out to a 21-0 lead by taking advantage of good field position in the first quarter and never looked back, extending the lead to 38-0 going into halftime.

The Bulldogs’ first four drives started at the Warriors’ 38, 43, 46 and 10.

Burgess missed last week’s 34-10 victory over Little Rock Catholic because of an injury, but he looked fine Friday night while leading the Bulldogs to five consecutive scoring drives before the backups entered the game. Burgess completed 6 of 8 passes for 162 yards with 3 touchdowns.

“We saw some positives from him, but we haven’t quite got him to where he was before,” Greenwood Coach Rick Jones said. “We thought it would be good for him to play a half or so to get the clock running. He did well.”

Greenwood put together a six-play touchdown drive on its first possession, capped by a 1-yard run by Austin Garnes for a 7-0 lead with 8:45 left in the first quarter.

Burgess then found Jonathan Clemons for a 27-yard score and Ryan Padilla for a 46-yard touchdown as the Bulldogs took a 21-0 lead with 4:08 left in the first quarter.

“Any time you come to Greenwood, you know it’s going to be a task,” Little Rock Hall Coach Tim Scarborough said. “We showed we focused on the game and not anything else. ”

Greenwood’s Hoyt Smith extended the lead to 28-0 with a 12-yard touchdown run with 11:24 left in the first half.

Hall (0-6, 0-4) finished with only two first downs and 43 yards in the first half. The Warriors scored their lone touchdown when Jalen Harper scored on a 18-yard run with 7:34 left in the game.
