GOLF Scott wins Grand Slam

Masters champion Adam Scott broke the course record Wednesday at Port Royal with a 7-under 64 to win the PGA Grand Slam of Golf in Southhampton, Bermuda, by two shots over U.S. Open champion Justin Rose. Trailing by four shots with 10 holes to play, Scott pulled ahead of his good friend for the first time with a 6-iron that settled inches from the cup on the par-5 17th for a tap-in eagle. Rose pulled his approach and had to settle for par. Rose, who opened with a 67, had a 69 in the 36-hole exhibition for the four major champions of the year. Scott finished at 8-under 134 in his first trip to Bermuda. He won a pink jacket to go along with the green jacket he won at Augusta. A 6-iron was also the club Scott used on the second playoff hole at Augusta National when he defeated Angel Cabrera, but this one came from a new set. Scott replaced his irons for the Presidents Cup two weeks ago. PGA champion Jason Dufner, who started two shots behind, fell off the pace quickly and was never a serious threat. He closed with a 70 to finish alone in third, five shots behind. Padraig Harrington, a three-time major winner, shot 71 to finish eight behind. As the defending champion, Harrington was first alternate to replace British Open champion Phil Mickelson, who chose not to play.

BASEBALL Rangers claim Cabrera

The Texas Rangers have claimed injured left-handed pitcher Edwar Cabrera on waivers from the Colorado Rockies. Cabrera didn’t pitch last season because of an injured left shoulder and had surgery July 10. He was on the Rockies’ 60-day disabled list and was transferred to the Rangers’ 60-day DL. His only major-league action was two starts for the Rockies in 2012. Since signing with Colorado as a free agent in 2008, he has gone 26-21 with a 3.13 ERA in the minors while averaging 11.1 strikeouts per nine innings. The Rangers announced the move Wednesday, and said infielder Jurickson Profar and outfielders Leonys Martin and Engle Beltre would all play on the same team in the Dominican Winter League. Right-hander Neftali Feliz will be in that league on another team.

Don Baylor is returning to the Los Angeles Angels to be their hitting coach. The Angels hired Baylor on Wednesday to replace Jim Eppard, who wasn’t retained by Manager Mike Scioscia. Baylor, 64, had been Arizona’s hitting coach for the past three years. The former manager of the Rockies and Cubs should be a respected veteran voice on Scioscia’s coaching staff, which is undergoing an overhaul after the big-budget Angels’ worst season in a decade. Many Orange County fans still have fond memories of Baylor, who won the American League MVP award while playing for the Angels in 1979, batting .296 with 36 home runs and 139 RBI. He spent six seasons with the then-California Angels, becoming the team’s clubhouse leader while hitting 141 home runs.

In the men’s second round, defending champion Andreas Seppi broke Paolo Lorenzi twice in the second set to win 6-3, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, the second-seeded Seppi will face Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who ousted Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-5, 7-5.

MOTOR SPORTS Drivers to Front Row

Front Row Motorsports will bring back drivers David Gilliland and David Ragan in 2014. “This has been a milestone year for us, and we’re extremely happy that two of the guys who helped get us here will be back next year,” team owner Bob Jenkins said. “We’re improving our race program, attracting more sponsors and setting and achieving higher and higher goals each year. Having David and David, our one-two punch, back in those cars next year is central to continuing our growth and improvement.” Gilliland will be back for a fifth season with Front Row and drive the No. 38. Ragan will be returning for his third year and drive the No. 34. Ragan earned Front Row its first victory in May at Talladega, where he and Gilliland used a dramatic last-lap dash to the checkered flag to sweep the front row. Ragan is ranked 26th in the Sprint Cup standings and Gilliland is 29th, and it’s the highest in the championship standings Front Row has been in its five years of full-time competition.

Four-time series champion Sebastien Bourdais has signed a two-year deal with KVSH Racing to replace Indianapolis 500 winner Tony Kanaan. The contract confirmed to The Associated Press on Wednesday gives team principals Kevin Kalkhoven, Jimmy Vasser and James “Sulli” Sullivan hope that KVSH can compete for titles going forward now that it has a driver that is tied for second with Mario Andretti and Dario Franchitti for series championships. Kanaan won the Indianapolis 500 in May with KVSH, but decided to leave for Chip Ganassi Racing next year. KVSH acted fast in offering the same deal it offered Kanaan to three-race winner James Hinchcliffe, but the team gave Hinchcliffe a short deadline to accept the contract that did not require the driver to bring any sponsorship. When Hinchcliffe decided KVSH’s timeline was too fast, the team moved on to Bourdais, winner of four consecutive Champ Car titles from 2004 through 2007. Bourdais has 31 victories, tied with Franchitti and Paul Tracy for eighth on the wins list.

BASKETBALL

Pelicans pick up options

The New Orleans Pelicans have exercised third-year options on the contracts of 2012 first-round draft choices Anthony Davis and Austin Rivers. Davis, the first overall pick in the 2012 draft, averaged 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.2 steals and was named an NBA All-Rookie First Team member last season. The 6-10 former Kentucky star was a regular starter at power forward. Rivers was the 10th overall pick in the draft. He averaged 6.2 points, 2.1 assists and 1.8 rebounds but saw his rookie campaign cut short by a hand injury in early March, during a game in which he’d scored 10 first-half points against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Tennessee will hold a Nov. 22 public dedication ceremony for a bronze statue and plaza to honor former women’s coach Pat Summitt. Construction is continuing on the plaza, located on the corner of Lake Loudon Boulevard and Phillip Fulmer Way. The plaza is across the street from Thompson-Boling Arena and the basketball team’s Pratt Pavilion practice facility. The project has been funded by about 550 donors. Summitt posted a 1,098-208 record and won eight national titles in 38 seasons as Tennessee’s coach. She stepped down in April 2012 after announcing a year earlier that she had early-onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type. Summitt remains on Tennessee’s coaching staff as head coach emeritus.
