The enforcement of the Arkansas law governing the hours of work for telephone and telegraph operators probably will be dropped by J.C. Clary, commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Statistics. Yesterday Attorney General W.L. Moose handed down an opinion which sets forth that a recent decision of the Supreme Court of the United States, involving the act of Congress intended to govern hours of operators, renders the Arkansas act ineffective, although the numbers of hours specified in the state law is less than the number specified in the act of Congress.

50 YEARS AGO Oct. 17, 1963

FAYETTEVILLE - Some 175 University of Arkansas employees went back to work today, suspending a two-week strike for better pay and more job security after they were promised negotiations between the university and their union. The negotiations are to begin Monday in Fayetteville, said John Hale of Little Rock, international representative of the State, County and Municipal Employees Union (AFL-CIO). Bob Parker, president of the Northwest Arkansas Labor Council, credited Gov. Faubus with settling the strike. “The action of the governor in suggesting that the trustees and the strikers negotiate was an invaluable aid in breaking the stalemate,” Parker said.

Striking teachers should get a 3 percent across-the board raise even if it means reprioritizing the budget, a group of Pulaski County Special School District parents said Sunday. During a brainstorming session at the end of a three-hour meeting Sunday, parents formed an advocacy group called “Pulaski County Parents for Students.”

Ending a week’s worth of speculation, the chief deputy in the county-circuit clerk’s office said Thursday that she would attend a public meeting today about Pulaski County’s troubled voter-registration database.Previously, Janice Hay had refused comment about whether she would show up at the meeting called by the Pulaski County Election Commission. It is unclear whether County-Circuit Clerk Carolyn Staley will attend the meeting. Staley did not return phone calls Wednesday and Thursday for comment. The commission called the meeting last week after repeated attempts to get an update on the database from Staley went unanswered.
