Distance doesn’t keep defensive end, Hogs apart

Junior defensive end Hjalte Froholdt will have traveled about 4,800 miles when he arrives in Fayetteville late tonight for an unofficial visit to Arkansas.

Froholdt, 6-5, 275 pounds, is making his first trip back to the United States from Denmark after playing his sophomore season at Warren (Ohio) Harding High School as an exchange student. He and his parents, Hans and Lisa, will take in the South Carolina game during their visit.

Froholdt and his father visited Arkansas in May during a week of traveling that also included visits to Notre Dame, Michigan State, Ohio State and Michigan. His mother asked him about Arkansas’ academics, the people and how he felt about the visit.

“The academics were great, and the academic counselors we’re awesome,” said Froholdt, who plans to return to the United States for his senior season. “I really like the people there, and it’s a great turnaround from last year, so it’s a work in progress. They will have success in the next couple of years.”

Froholdt is playing club football for the Gold Diggers of Sollerod. He is rated the No. 14 overall prospect by ESPN for the 2015 class and has scholarship offers from numerous schools that include Arkansas, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State.

He said he is looking forward to this weekend’s visit.

“I really want to see how game day is like,” Froholdt said. “I want to see more of the campus and of course how the new football facility looks.”

The communication between Froholdt and Arkansas cornerbacks coach Taver Johnson hasn’t stopped, despite his return to Denmark.

“Coach Taver and I have talked a few times over the phone, or else we talk over Twitter,” Froholdt said

Froholdt also will visit Alabama and Florida State before wrapping up the week by taking in a game at Michigan. The Crimson Tide and Seminoles haven’t extended offers.

Froholdt, who lists Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan and Arkansas as his top four schools, said nothing is certain.

“After the visits I’ll come up with the final, final four, and then I’m probably going to pick a school soon,” he said. “Since I’m ‘so far away’ it would be like a burden off my shoulders.”

OFFICIALLY SPEAKING

Highly recruited tight end DeAndre Goolsby of Derby, Kan., will be Arkansas’ lone official visitor for the South Carolina game.

Goolsby, 6-5, 232 pounds, has taken official visits to Ohio State, Florida and Oklahoma and plans to visit Kansas State, where his father, Brian, played fullback from 1995-1998 and was coached by Arkansas receivers coach Michael Smith.

“Once he gets to college he can probably put on 20 pounds in a matter of months,” Derby Coach Brandon Clark said. “That alone is a huge upside for him, and then the way his feet are and the way he runs routes.”

Clark said Goolsby’s elusiveness is like that of a much smaller receiver.

“We’ve put him on punt return just to get the ball in his hands,” Clark said. “He took one back for 70 yards that we weren’t even blocking for him. We were actually going for the block on the punt, and he probably made five guys miss and took it to the house.” E-mail Richard Davenport at
