VOLLEYBALL Bozzo, Evans lead UAM to victory

Senior Tori Bozzo had 20 kills and 14 digs, while junior Tasha Evans added 12 kills and six blocks, to lead Arkansas-Monticello to a 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 25-21 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday in Itta Bena, Miss.

Junior Gabriella Jandotti, the reigning Great American Conference defensive player of the week, led UAM (10-10) with seven blocks and junior Jessica Cuba had 15 digs and six kills.

Harding beats Henderson State

Harding extended its winning streak to seven matches with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-15 victory over Henderson State on Tuesday in Arkadelphia.

Alyssa Short led Harding (15-5, 6-0 Great American Conference) with 11 kills and Mollie Arnold added 10. Taryn Eubank had 34 assists, 10 digs and 4 aces for the Lady Bisons. Sarah Williams led Henderson State (1-13, 0-6) with eight kills.

Begic honored again

UALR junior outside hitter Edina Begic was named Sun Belt Conference offensive player of the week, the conference announced Tuesday. It was the fifth consecutive such honor for the Bosnian native, a league record.

Begic set a school record with 36 kills in a four-set victory over Arkansas State on Oct. 2. It was a Sun Belt record for a four-set match during the rally-scoring era, and she had 16 kills in the fourth and final set. She had 14 kills in the third set of Friday’s victory over Louisiana-Monroe and 22 with 21 digs in Monday’s victory at Troy, the 11th consecutive victory for UALR (13-4, 5-0).

Begic currently leads the Sun Belt and is second nationally in kills per set (5.59) and points per set (6.32).

GOLF Arkansas men finish sixth

Thomas Sorensen finished tied for fourth place individually, leading the Arkansas men to a sixth-place finish Tuesday at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Vestavia Hills, Ala.

Sorensen shot 72-68-69-209 to earn his third career top-five finish. Sebastian Cappelen made 12 consecutive pars to finish tied for 16th at 254 (73-68-73).

Alabama won the team competition, finishing 16 strokes better than Texas A&M. Alabama-Birmingham, Texas and Auburn rounded out the top five.

Purdy, Wonder Boys finish second

Jason Purdy shot a 3-under-par 68 Tuesday, finishing with a three-round score of 214, but lost in a playoff to Washburn’s Max Lazzo as Arkansas Tech finished second of 20 teams at the Heart of America Invitational in Warrensburg, Mo.

The Wonder Boys’ three-round score of 879 was 14 strokes behind tournament champion Central Missouri, which placed three golfers in the top 10.

SOCCER OBU duo earns conference honor

Ouachita Baptist sophomore Haley Hatcher and senior Sarah Broyles were named the Great American Conference’s offensive player and goalkeeper of the week on Tuesday.

Hatcher scored three goals last week. Two came in a victory over Northwestern Oklahoma State on Friday and she scored the only goal in a 1-1 tie with Southwestern Oklahoma State on Sunday.

Broyles had just two saves against Northwestern Oklahoma State and had seven saves against Southwestern Oklahoma State.

John Brown women earn victory

The John Brown women got goals from three freshmen in a 3-1 victory over Science and Arts (Okla.) on Tuesday in Chickasha, Okla.

Midfielder Savannah Beth got her first collegiate goal for John Brown (7-3, 2-1 Sooner Athletic Conference) in the 18th minute. Science and Arts (1-8, 0-3) tied the game at 1-1 in the 33nd minute on a goal by Jade Ovendale.

Sara Lachance also got her first collegiate goal, giving John Brown a 2-1 lead in the 56th minute. Laura Garcia got her third goal of the season in the 87th minute to provide the final margin.
